This is the hardest piece in Book One Suzuki Piano method. It is called "Christmas-day Secrets." It is 3rd from the end. The second most difficult piece in the book is usually considered "French Children" about the 6th piece in the book. In this short video, the student does their best to execute proper finger and hand position. Technique is very important when learning an instrument. In the Suzuki piano method, learning by ear allows students to model the good technique of the teacher. Together we take our time discussing and practicing these efforts. We find cute and clever associations with each shape that deeply embed the technique into young students.

This is an insider view of some of my Suzuki teacher training sessions. I work with all my teachers on a biweekly to monthly basis, besides being available in general for all issues. I am sharing it because it gives outsiders a better understanding of how Suzuki piano teachers are taught to think and break apart pieces and to become familiar with the sections of the music that give some particular challenge to the fine motor skills and the areas that need previewing before introducing more information. This is also a technique-heavy video, as technique is foundational to all students. You will see that I hold my hand and fingers in a very particular way which is developed in the first seven pieces of the book. This video starts in the middle of Book One.

There are several approaches to technique in the Suzuki method. Each Suzuki studio will have its own particular method to hand and finger shape, yet a child needs to be taught one firm point at a time and therefore, other valuable approaches may marry into the initial technique later in the pursuit of great technique. Be prepared to take responsibility for the execution of good technique where it concerns the hand, finger, elbow, tummy, shoulders and feet as a parent partner and model. We play fun games to acquaint the very young pianist with technique. To learn more about what particular technical choices our Suzuki Piano Academy has committed to, please call 916-397-1404.
Proper seating is essential in the Suzuki Piano Method. A child should be seated with legs parallel to the floor until their core strengthens, typically around the age of 7 or 8 at which point the legs can begin more of a downward angle. The elbow should comfortably at the side and at key level with the wrist elevated. The feet should be flat on the footstool. Without proper seating, injury can occur even in middle school and early high school years. When making the commitment to study the piano, the cost proper seating is understood in that undertaking. For more information about seating suggestions, please contact the Suzuki Piano Academy at 916-397-1404.
