On June 24th Sycamore at East Hanover hosted two separate flag raising ceremonies in honor of our residents that have successfully conquered Covid, and our personal care partners and 1st responders that are committed to serving and protecting our health care community. Sycamore is proud to share some of the beautiful moments we experienced that day and hope that it brings a little bit of joy to yours!
Happy Rehab Week to our amazing therapy team! We appreciate your dedication and commitment to bettering our residents’ lives! A special thank you to our wonderful Director of Rehab, Becky! Thank you for always going the extra mile for Sycamore Living and doing so with a smile on your face 😊. Becky Cheshire Latts
Mr. Strumolo was admitted to Morristown Medical Center with a Covid diagnosis back in April. His condition quickly deteriorated and he was placed on a ventilator. While the odds were against him, Mr. Strumolo fought back and with the support of some wonderful doctors including Dr. LaRosa and Dr. Zimick he was able to stabilize. He was even given the nickname of “miracle boy”! Once he was well enough to discharge from the hospital he came to Sycamore Living at East Hanover in June. Over the past few months he has been able to remove his trach, start eating, begin walking, and increase his mobility! Today, Mr. Strumolo is back on his feet and ready to join his family at home!
Recently we discharged a very special resident. Maureen has had quite the journey, which ultimately led her to Sycamore Living at East Hanover. In the next few pictures, you can read through her eloquently written story. Please swipe right to join her adventure from New Jersey to New Mexico and back with a few stops in between!
A Day of Remembrance for those that lost their lives and for all of those who gave their lives. Today, We Remember. Always in our hearts and never forgotten.
At Sycamore our mission is to assist our residents in their full mind and body recovery, while ensuring we maintain their dignity and happiness. It is in this spirit, we share with you just one of our many success stories and portray what dedicated care can do for an individual’s journey to recovery!
Yesterday, the creative juices were flowing nicely at Sycamore Living. Our residents took part in various paint and sip activities. Art therapy is an excellent avenue to stimulate mental health and improve overall wellbeing. Residents are able to channel their feelings, and often develop new coping mechanisms when participating in various creative activities. It was great to see so many smiles all around!
This year has provided unprecedented challenges for our most vulnerable population. However, the greatest success stories are born in times of such peril. We would like to share a story of perservance and success regarding our dear resident, Anthony. Anthony was diagnosed with Covid earlier this year in March. When he arrived at the hospital, Covid had taken quite a toll on his body. He first lost his right foot and then his left foot. He then came to Sycamore Living for rehab and to start a new chapter of his life with prosthetic legs. The last eight months of Anthony’s life have been taxing, however he has shown immense strength and courage in recovering and rebuilding his life. Yesterday Anthony was able to leave us walking independently!
Yesterday we hosted a small gathering with our community partners to reconnect and realign. This year has been particularly challenging to navigate for the nursing home industry. It was a beautiful evening of thoughtful conversation on healthcare initiatives, regulations, and reform.
Rachel and Frank give true meaning to the expression, we are stronger together. This happily married couple was tending to their daily lives, as they have been doing for greater than a half century when they both tested positive for Covid. Shortly thereafter, they were admitted to St. Barnabas hospital, and remained there for approximately one month. Once they were stable and strong enough to be discharged to a Post Acute Center, we were thankful they chose Sycamore Living at East Hanover for their rehab and post-acute care. Frank and Rachel stood by one another through the recovery process, regained their strength, and discharged home after beating the odds together! They also celebrated their 67th marriage anniversary with us, please swipe right to see some lovely throwback pictures from their wedding and past anniversaries!
Today as we reflect on the challenging and unprecedented year that has passed, we are humbled and grateful for all the support we have received. We are grateful for our dedicated team members who have gone above and beyond their job descriptions this year, we are grateful for our residents who have shown resilience and courage in the midst of isolation and statistics, we are grateful for their families who trusted us and patiently worked with us, and we are grateful for our community partners who have always showed up in our time of need. Our Culinary Director, Merv and his team, treated our residents to a very special Thanksgiving feast! They also baked fresh homemade pies for all team members working today. We would like to wish everyone a very Safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
We are so excited to introduce our resident veterans to our community. Please meet Mr. Shoemaker who served in the Korean War, and Mr. Leo who served in the Vietnam War. We are proud to have you both as part of our Sycamore family!
Sycamore extends its sincere gratitude to all the veterans and their families for the dedication and service they’ve given our country. We are honored to be able to care for a few veterans and have them call our community home.
Team Sycamore wishes you a Happy and Safe Halloween! 🎃👻🎃
Our physicians have been tremendous partners over this past year as we navigated these unprecedented times. Yesterday, we hosted our second small gathering to show our appreciation for all their hard work and commitment to Sycamore. We engaged in productive conversations on how to best manage our residents’ episode of care while keeping the human element at the forefront of their Sycamore experience. In addition, for Breast Cancer Awareness month our team wore pink to honor and bring attention to the brave women fighting this disease. Note: 1 in 8 women may develop breast cancer during their lifetime. 🙏

In recognition of “Pride in Food Service Week”, Sycamore celebrated their culinary team! Our culinary team was treated with a three course gourmet dining experience curated by a special guest private chef! We concluded our week of celebrations on a sweet note with a delicious candy bar and array of desserts. The team also wore red today in observance of “Heart Month”, to build awareness of heart disease.
January was a big birthday month at Sycamore. Two birthdays are extra special! Our Director of Environmental Services, Dave, and our Central Supply Coordinator, Marie, have been two of our main drivers for infection control. Thank you both for all you do to keep our residents and team members safe and protected everyday! We wish you both a very Happy Birthday! 🎁 🎂🎉
In an effort to keep the human spirit lifted, Sycamore has constructed new, safe and cozy visitation rooms so you can visit your loved ones. We understand how important it is for our residents to be able to see their family, and we are doing everything we can to make that possible and secure.
Sycamore at East Hanover opened at the height of pandemic earlier this year. We effectively served as a Covid recovery center to ease the pressure on the hospital systems which allowed the hospitals more room to treat the sicker Covid patients. In 2021, Sycamore will keep one isolated neighborhood dedicated to caring for individuals affected by Covid 19. Throughout the year we have navigated the challenges stemmed from the pandemic by diligently practicing infection control and precautions to keep our residents and team members safe. As we enter the new year we can see a glimmer of hope and light at the end of the tunnel! This week the residents and team members received vaccines for Covid 19. We hope this provides comfort and some peace of mind to our residents, team members, and their families.
