Mrs Speechie P February 13 at 1:45 PM · Don’t “wait and see” - early intervention is key! Here’s the truth- a pretty large percentage of parents with children with delays and disabilities will say comments like this *delayed them* from starting early intervention. But, here’s the truth: 1. “My cousin’s kid didn’t talk till he was 4 and he’s fine” ➡️ research shows that about 70% of late talkers are able to catch up by the time they start kindergarten. It also shows that these kids who catch up often go on to have weaknesses or additional needs in language, literacy, social skills, behavior, and executive function. The other 30% of kids continue to need speech therapy support after kindergarten. It’s also important to note that a “late talker” is a child under 30 months, so children older than this who are not talking likely do have a reason for this. This DOES NOT mean that they won’t be “fine”. This also does not mean that the cousin’s son who is “fine” doesn’t have an undiagnosed disability- or would not have benefited from early intervention. I would imagine he had a very tough toddlerhood having no meaningful way to communicate, which speech therapy could have provided him until he did begin speaking. 2. “Boys talk later than girls” ➡️ This is true, boys develop speech in a manner that is generally about a month later than girls. A month. Not 6 months, not 2 years. Just slightly. They should still be meeting all of their milestones - which were made for both boys and girls. Same goes for multilingual kids. 3. “Let’s just wait 6 months”- I think in very young kids (like 15-18 months), it’s ok to wait 3 months if you aren’t ready. But a child who is over 2 and not speaking shouldn’t have to wait. Also I always tell parents who are thinking about waiting to call around in their area to see if there are waitlists. Sometimes waiting 6 months for a referral can turn into a year before intervention starts. So- bottom line, trust your gut. Schedule an evaluation. An evaluation doesn’t necessarily mean intervention is needed but it will give you a good idea of how your child is developing as compared to same age peers! And intervention can start if it’s needed! ❤️
