Thank you Rabbi Dan for your heartwarming message to the LGBTQ+ community! Daniel Levin Yesterday at 3:29 PM · I want to support my LGBTQ+ friends who fear the rightward turn of the Supreme Court may prove their civil rights in jeopardy. It has been my honor and privilege to celebrate the marriages of many LGBTQ+ couples. I am proud of our congregation's efforts to fight for marriage equality and civil rights for LGBTQ+ individuals. Our Moving Forward Together efforts in 2014-15 culminated with the celebration of a marvelous legal wedding for two dear friends and members of our congregation. And I have been blessed to be asked to share in so many more since that joyous day. I will continue to stand up for LGBTQ+ civil rights. The right to love is a human right. God is not gendered, and love is not gendered. God does not care whom we love, but that we love, and that our households are safe from discrimination, persecution and fear. I believe with all my heart we should make America the same - a place where we may all find the safety and freedom to rise to the truest expression of our most authentic selves. Whether you are in Florida, or anywhere, and need spiritual support, I will be there for you. If you seek to consecrate and legalize your loving commitment, I would be honored to celebrate your wedding. If you live outside of Florida, I can connect you with a rabbi, cantor, or clergy near you. Warm, cold, rain, or sunshine, I am here. Your community is here. We hold our doors open wide for you. Inside you will find safety and protection and love. You are not alone. I will walk with you for as long as it takes for our country to realize its promise for equal justice, protection, and freedom for all.

Just as we are encouraging all to vote in today's Election, our Beth El Early Learning Center students participated in an election of their very own - between storybook characters! The Pre-K students took to the campaign trail electioneering for their favorite characters such as Pete the Cat, Llama Llama and the Cat in the Hat while each of our younger classes “exercised their right to vote” by participating in an obstacle course that led them straight to the polls. Our students learned an incredible lesson today, that their choice matters, and we couldn’t be prouder!

For this week’s Shabbat Wisdom, Rabbi Greg Weisman explores Parashat Toldot, which shows us one way we can try to communicate with the Holy One: Rebecca, in the despair of infertility, inquires with God about her plight. But that was thousands of years ago. In our world and in our time, where is God that we can inquire, and how do we perceive God’s response?

We are grief-stricken by the events that continue to unfold today in the sacred halls of the U.S. Capitol. The First Amendment protects our right to gather peaceably, to express ourselves freely in spoken and written word. The hallmark of a healthy society is where we can debate policy and even values, while still embracing the collective sanctity of shared citizenship and the rule of law. The attack today on the seat of our nation’s government threatens all of us who together love our country, and who believe in the value of representative democratic government. We should champion our collective right to express our opinions and beliefs, no matter how vociferously we may disagree. But we all must condemn in the strongest possible terms those who would violently disrupt the business of our elected officials, or seek to sabotage the rule of law enshrined in our nation’s constitution. On this painful and difficult evening, we offer our prayer: Eternal Our God - Sovereign of the Universe: Spread the wings of your Sheltering Presence over the members the U.S. House of Representatives and the United States Senate. As our elected officials shape the destiny of the country, bless them with wisdom and understanding, and inspire them to be true to their oaths to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. May they draw on the inspiration and wisdom that guided the founders of our democracy, and show them the way that will lead us to transcend this painful, hateful moment. May the brave men and women in law enforcement in our nation’s capital, who spend this day in harm’s way, be kept safe from violence and harm. Cause us to embrace the virtues of humility, forbearance, decency, and kindness. Teach us to renounce anger and cynicism, lead us to embrace Your teachings and Your truths, to be pursuers of justice and peace, that we may learn to join hands with one another to build America to be, once again, a light to the nations. This moment calls all of us to renew our pledge to the motto of our nation: E Pluribus Unum – out of the many, we are one. We must reject with all our might the forces that seek to divide us as a nation, and stand together as one nation, under God, against violence, intolerance, bigotry, and hate. We must demand, both of ourselves and our leaders, that we restore our commitment to honesty, integrity, and the common good, so that we can renew trust and faith in the institutions of government and our public servants. Let us learn to celebrate the humanity in those that differ from us, to learn again to love not simply our neighbors but also the stranger, and to restore a collective love for the United States of America.
