CLEVELANDBANNER.COM Veterans advocate Kim Dees dies Tennessee Department of Veterans Services September 17 at 2:45 PM · The State of Tennessee lost a true volunteer this week. It is with heavy heart that we share the passing of retired Lieutenant Colonel Kim Dees with you. As a member of the Southeastern Veterans Home Council he was instrumental in making the Cleveland/Bradley County Tennessee State Veterans' Home a reality. We're glad that the groundbreaking ceremony occurred during his watch, but we know he would have been so proud to attend the grand-opening in the future. We are grateful for his faithful service to his fellow veterans. Rest easy, Doc Dees! For visitation and burial information: https://bit.ly/2RD2tSa

As many of you know, the Tennessee Department of Health and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced they will begin easing visitation restrictions at Tennessee long-term care facilities starting October 1, 2020. Today is the first day we are able to allow limited outdoor visitation at our Veterans’ Homes and we couldn’t be happier! All visitors were screened and followed the safety precautions. As a reminder, please contact each home directly to schedule an appointment and to determine the type of visitation permitted at the facility where your loved one resides. We sincerely appreciate your patience as we work hard to remain compliant with all state and federal guidelines, and ensure the visitation runs as smoothly as possible.

Meet TSVH Knoxville resident Stuart Harvey Smith. Stuart was born on April 11, 1928 in Draper Valley, Virginia and was raised on a 300 acre farm. After leaving high school, Stuart worked in a silk mill and made repairs on machinery until he joined the United States Army during World War II. During his service, he worked as a truck driver and was then transferred to the United State Air Force where he earned the rank of Corporal. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and other commendations. After leaving active duty in 1947, Stuart continued his work as a truck driver, which he did for 60 years before his retirement. Stuart goes by the nickname "Speedy" because he is often the bus driver co-pilot during outings. We are so grateful for Speedy and all of our veterans for their brave service to our country!
