Bears, bears, everywhere! Kevin Taylor snapped these black bear photos on a Wildlife Expeditions tour last week.
Do you struggle to tell the difference between black bears and grizzly bears? One tip is to look at their ears. Black bears have larger ears in proportion to their head than grizzly bears.

Frosty mornings and turning leaves have us thinking of fall wildlife trips to Yellowstone! Our guides often get asked, "What is the best place to view wildlife in Yellowstone?" The answer is typically Lamar or Hayden Valley. But which one is truly best? We pitted the valleys against each other in an epic showdown. Find out which valley came out on top in today's blog post!

If you live in Jackson Hole or an area with an elk population, you might have recently heard bull elk bugling during the fall rut, or breeding season. Bull elk can be easily identified by their impressive antlers during the summer and fall, some growing over 300″ of new bone over the course of just a few months. But after investing so much energy in growing antlers, why do bull elk shed them in the winter?
Find out the answer on this week's blog!

This winter break, a number of our Mountain Academy students worked to fulfill their community service hours, due at the beginning of January. Giving back is one of the fundamental values of a Mountain Academy education.
Several of our Jackson campus 5th graders were "caught in the act" in last week's Jackson Hole News&Guide's "Circling the Square" by Connie Owen:
"[C]atherine Maguire, an elementary school teacher at Mountain Academy, and four of her fifth grade students were seen at the Pioneer Homestead Apartments a few days ago brushing snow off cars. Residents appreciated the work of Hayden, Harrison, Eliza and Fiona. The kids are learning at a young age that happiness is found in service."

This week the Graduate Program of Teton Science Schools is highlighting Alex! Alex grew up in eastern Washington and attended University of Washington, studying biocultural anthropology and archeology for her undergrad. Before coming to TSS, she worked in Cultural Resource Management while also coaching high school dance.
Alex's favorite memory so far as a TSS grad student was a camping trip she and some grads took up to Beula Lake in Yellowstone. She's looking forward to trying to intertwine her passions for anthropology and education this year.
Q: When you're not in class, where would we find you?
A: Enjoying a cold beverage, watching reality TV, procrastinating on homework, and trying to make people laugh (usually at the same time)
Q: If you had one food to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A: Any form of potatoes!
Q: What is a book you are currently reading?
A: Whiskey When We're Dry

A warm welcome to Eric Weinheimer, interim CEO of Teton Science Schools! Eric most recently held the role of President and CEO of Forefront, a 1,100-member organization that supports foundations and nonprofits in working collectively for community benefit. Prior, Eric was President and CEO of Cara Chicago, a nonprofit that provides comprehensive training, job placement, and support services to individuals experiencing homelessness. Eric has also engaged in inequity, diversity, and inclusion work in nonprofit environments, experience that will provide TSS additional leadership in these organizational priorities.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Eric brings extensive nonprofit management credentials, including strong financial acumen to balance mission and margin,” said TSS Board Chair Kristie Wade. “His experience in long-term non-profit and business leadership will provide the bridge and oversight that TSS needs during this interim period.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

"As human beings, the solace and grounding natural spaces provide are our birthright. While representation can shift perceptions and inspire, it doesn’t equate to improved accessibility without the means, the support and the community to fulfill the promise of these places. Sheena, Sofia and I have access to these generative backcountry experiences not only as a consequence of overcoming the odds to find one other, but also due to our unique proximities to whiteness and the privileges that allowed us to access these spaces." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Place-based education, or aligning learning with tangible experiences and ideas happening beyond the classroom, is naturally wired for connection. And now might be just the right time to learn how it can transform your teaching.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

"I wanted to send some gratitude your way for helping to facilitate an amazing Nordic day with our participants. The kids all had an amazing weekend getting out on TSS gear and honestly so did I! I am truly inspired by how many people were able to come together to make this happen for our participants and all of us at Coombs are so grateful for it." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The Mountain Academy of Teton Science Schools TETON VALLEY CAMPUS IS CLOSED TODAY (Tues 2/23) because of hazardous road conditions. Teton 401 is also closed. This is considered a snow day; impacted students will receive excused absences. All levels at the Teton Valley Campus are canceled for today.
The JACKSON CAMPUS is OPEN. Jackson Campus students who live in Idaho or Alta should plan to join their classes in our hybrid format.
Please note the following information from our Student and Family Handbook regarding hazardous road conditions.
Hazardous Road Conditions and Road Restrictions:
Mountain Academy values student safety and does not expect students to travel on roads with Chain Law 2 or No Unnecessary Travel restrictions to get to their primary school campus. Lower, Middle, and Upper School students who are unable to get to campus due to weather are expected to participate in learning from home. Middle and upper school students will be expected to check the online learning management system for schoolwork. Students who feel they need time beyond the absence policy for makeup work should request an extension from their teachers, as needed.

Virtual Place-Based Symposium 2021: Where Place-Based Ideas Come to Life
We loved seeing an article in Clearing Magazine's Winter 2021 issue written by one of our former lead field instructors, Sami Wolniakowski!
