Maternal mortality across the spectrum shows stunning increases in the United States. The exact causes of maternal mortality arise from cultural and medical factors. About 60% of these deaths are preventable, according to the CDC. Dr. Lisa Hollier, chief medical officer of obstetrics and gynecology for Texas Children's Health Plan, explains that heart failure is one identifiable cause of maternal distress.
