The Children’s Home was pleased to welcome Hope Squad founder Dr. Greg Hudnall to our campus today. Dr. Hudnall founded Hope Squad 16 years ago while he was working in the Provo City School District office in Utah, which at that time was dealing with an average of one or two youth suicides every year. Dr. Hudnall founded the peer-to-peer organization soon after and Hope Squads were subsequently implemented in every school in the district. Suicides in the area dropped exponentially. Check out the entire story in the "news" section at tchcincy.org.

Today, transition services trainees helped assemble materials for Budget Bootcamp. “It’s always fortuitous when we have opportunities to let our transition services students get away from our usual operations at Got-Special KIDS,” said Shayla Becze, job readiness and retail operations senior manager. “Any working adult knows that the ability to adapt to changing needs on the job site is a constant. But, for the autism community, dealing with change is a skill many must be taught. Our trainees were not expecting to put together resource folders for Budget Bootcamp today, but they handled the change from their usual work routine very well.”
If you haven't checked out Got-Special KIDS lately you should really give the new items a look. One of our mom's tried out GSK's Wiggle Wobble Chair Feet and sent this photo. Visit https://www.got-specialkids.com/ to learn more.

Our Early Childhood Day Treatment and Day Treatment students took part in snow making and their traditional door decorating contest. But, there's something more important than just holiday fun taking place. “Sensory play has a vital role in development especially for younger learners,” said April Kandil, director of campus based programs at The Children’s Home. “Children are born with the innate desire to explore their world with their senses. These activities help a developing mind categorize and make sense of their surroundings. It’s even more important for the special needs population who may have sensory integration issues. Sensory play also aids in language development, fine motor skills and even gives many kids a sense of calming.”

Mamie Phipps Clark, PhD, conducted groundbreaking research on race, self-esteem and its link to child development. Her work, alongside her husband, Kenneth Clark, PhD, was instrumental in the Supreme Court case of 1954, Brown v Board of Education. Noting the limited services available to children of color, she spearheaded the first agency to offer psychological services to at-risk children and families in the Harlem area of New York City. Thanks to her work, agencies like The Children’s Home exist to provide specialized mental and behavioral health services to vulnerable children and their specific needs.
