We celebrated the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment with a parade — complete with iconic “Votes For Women” sashes, ribbons and extravagant hats — in honor of the Suffragists’ historic marches. In addition to the parade, there were readings of historic suffragist songs by various community members and a brief speech providing historical context by resident Ruth Shaffer, a researcher and frequent contributor to Berks County Historical Review. Shaffer wrote of a series of articles about the suffragist movement in Berks County that have been published this year and will be giving a presentation about women’s suffrage here this month. Happy World Kindness Day! At the Heritage of Green Hills, we know that wellness is about engaging the mind, body and spirit! Our Well by Design program focuses on 8 dimensions of wellness and we're currently showcasing Emotional Wellness on Fridays on Facebook. To keep spirits up and remind ourselves of what we mean to each other, we're giving out "hugs, COVID-style." That means sticking them on our friends, our neighbors' doors and even sending them via mail. It's a perfect way to celebrate Gratitude Month.
Thank you WFMZ for highlighting the distinguished veterans at The Heritage of Green Hills.
Our Veterans Association held a ceremony to observe Veterans Day and to honor members Lou Cinfici and Curtis Bixler, who have been awarded the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal. This commemorative medal is an expression of appreciation from the Korean government to United States service men and women who served in the Korean War. After the event, all of the community’s veterans and widowed spouses of veterans were invited to attend a luncheon honoring their service. They received poppies and special facemasks to commemorate the day.

Several elves have moved into the Heritage this holiday season. We're told that once they get their facemasks, they will begin to explore the community. They can be spotted on shelves (their natural habitat), but also in other nooks and crannies on campus... Stay tuned to hear about their adventures.
Traditionally, our residents donate to the Employee Appreciation Fund all year and then at the holidays they present a check to each employee as a sign of their appreciation for the staff’s services throughout the year. The residents usually gather in the Tavern for a party and celebrate each employee individually as they present the checks. This year, we were unable to have the large party, but our residents are very thankful for all the staff's efforts during this unusual year and the fund was incredibly generous. Most checks will be handed out on Friday.

The first independent living resident to be inoculated was Dr. Cedric “Jim” Jimerson. Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Jimerson is a World War II veteran with two Battle Stars. He joined Reading’s Community General Hospital as the only board-eligible surgeon who had completed a formal surgical residency at an approved university hospital. He retired as the Chair of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Jimerson will celebrate his 102nd birthday this August.

Today is National Wear Red Day, and we're doing our part to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease in women. Despite the devasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, cardiovascular disease remains the leading killer of women in the U.S., according to the American Heart Association’s newly released 2021 Heart Disease & Stroke Statistics. Heart disease kills one woman approximately every 80 seconds, taking more lives than all forms of cancer combined, and cardiac events are on the rise in young women in their 20s. We celebrated the breadwinners and the breadmakers, the educators, the role models, the resilient and inspirational fixtures in our children’s lives. Ever since the invention of motherhood, mothers have been innovating, creating, and developing. They strategize and organize, never stopping until the work is done. We can never celebrate them enough. National Working Moms Day celebrates every mom.

Saturday, March 20, was International Day of Happiness and we celebrated with goofy games, silly costumes and a spontaneous harmonica concert! We played the Best Friends Challeng, Duck Chuck and Chicken Flickin’, then ate more smiley-face cookies than you can shake a stick at. Plus, squid hats. Because squids hats make you smile. The weather was gorgeous and made us all happy!
