The HCG has been blessed with an amazing relationship with Deer Valley Athletic club. 😍We work together on many fun projects that benefit our membership. This fall and winter we are once again blessed to be offering additional indoor seating to our restaurant patrons . The mezzanine is located in the indoor tennis court facility. It is spacious and quite unique!, recently remodeled and complete with amazing tennis themed art for sale by local artist Bethany Jewell! The mezzanine is also available for rental if you are looking to entertain a larger group than our restaurant will allow. Complete with our full service menu!! I was recently asked about a traditional holiday drink that may be served in Greece. There were a few and so we decided to experiment with an Greek American version of something we love here, and that is HOT CHOCOLATE. In the spirit of the holidays and cold, frosty weather, I wanted to share a recipe that we made with my favorite red wine, Mavrodaphne of Patras. Mavrodaphne is a very popular wine in Greece. Sweet and rich and when people taste it, you just know it's something special. We made this recipe yesterday for my birthday at the restaurant and let's just say, it was a HUGE hit. It's rich, creamy, warm, chocolatey and topped off with this amazing wine.
I'm thinking the wine packaged up with the recipe and ingredients would be amazing for the wine lovers on your list!!
Enjoy!! Our bottles are $30!!
Mavrodaphne Hot Chocolate
Ingredients:
2/3 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
2/3 cup Mavrodaphne wine
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup half and half
2 tablespoons sugar
Pinch of salt
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
Add it all to a slow cooker and serve warm. Top with marshmallows!!

Merry Christmas!! Since we are having a white one here in Boone, did you know it snows in Greece? Weather in Greece on Christmas varies within regions of the islands. The mainland weather is generally cold with cloudy sky, rain and snow in the mountains. The average temperature is about 13oC. However, the island weather varies and is noticeably warmer than the mainland. The larger islands like Crete are quite sunny but windy. Island hopping is limited during these seasons but can travel to Crete. The weather here about 15-17oC and the people of Crete have their own Christmas tradition. The Cretans takes part in Santa run where people dress up like Santa Claus and run for charity.

As we say goodbye to 2020, I’m reflecting on so many wonderful memories this year. Mike and I were talking about the abundance of blessings that have come our way mostly in the form of magical people , friends and associates that have continued to bless and inspire us each and every day. The new year is just that, a new fresh start. For many it will be completely different without the presence of family and friends who will not continue on with us. We carry them with us and we keep moving forward. I never had a vision for opening a restaurant. Never. My vision was different. I always wanted to have a traveling “fort” that I could set up in different parts of the country. Weird I know 🤷🏻♀️I would pop the tent, lay down pillows and invite people to come in and color, drink hot chocolate , eat cookies and just be kids for a bit. Hopefully they would meet new people and make new friends. I saw this vision so clearly. A place to escape and connect away from the troubles and toils of the outside world. A place to laugh and forget. A place to celebrate and love each other. And God said ok. I’ll give you a restaurant. 🙏😊May our fort continue to grow and cover as many of you as possible with love, great food and abundance of joy. It is our honor to make that happen for all of you. As we approach a new year, all Greeks are making Vasilopita. It’s a huge tradition. If you want something fun to do with the kids, here’s a recipe that I’m going to try this year. This one uses cake mix , by the way there are hundreds of recipes all delicious but I think this one is a great activity cake for the kiddos. I’m going to put the recipe in the comments. After you make it, please post a photo of the cake and the chefs I’m going to be giving away some goodies!!! OPA!!

Halva is a Middle Eastern sweet made by mixing freshly milled tahini (sesame butter) with sugar. It is a flaky, yet dense confection that is almost fudge-like. I get lots of requests for this protein , vitamin rich sweet. Have you had it? Like to see us offer it?

This is my yiayia and Papou. I never met him. He died of cancer before I was born😓this was an arranged marriage and love at first sight from what I’m told.❤️❤️( they all looked so gloomy and doomy back then😂) My grandparents, Anna and Gus, came from Samos Greece, and opened The New Way Lunch restaurant in Buffalo NY. Many of the menu items in our restaurant are authentic family recipes from both of them! Food greatly varies from region to region , village to village and we do our best to bring you the best taste of Greece from my family to yours. 💙🎉
