Congratulations to all of last week's Middle School Halloween Costume Contest Winners! 🎃👻💀
Happy Election Day 🇺🇸
Our mission here at Independence includes teaching our students to become good citizens with leadership qualities, both here at school and in the community. The electoral process is experienced each year at Indy through the selection of Student Government Association officers and representatives. Campaign messages are presented, speeches are given, and the students vote for the candidates of their choice. Voting matters.

REMINDER: Shorts and t-shirt sets for P.E. are available to order in the Parent Zone.
As the weather is cooler, our Indy Spirit Store has a great selection for sweatpants and sweatshirts suitable for P.E. The students will be outside as much as possible and we would like them to wear weather appropriate clothing.
Visit indyspiritstore.com to browse cool weather attire.
Although academics are the heart of The Independence School, we believe that Co- and Extra-curriculars are just as important in a student's educational journey.

Just for fun...sharing this little piece of video capturing a group of students enjoying being outdoors on our campus just before the break. We are looking forward to being back on campus soon!
Meet middle school science teacher, Mrs. Sarah Ferrell.
This year, Mrs. Ferrell is teaching 7th and 8th graders. She is continually inspired by our partners at Stroud Water Research Center and says their work informs her teaching. Along with her teaching colleague, Mrs. Jessie Copeland, Mrs. Ferrell helps to run our Independence Environmental Studies Club. The club's bluebird nest boxes (supplied by the Delaware Nature Society and built by the students) will be used by Mrs. Ferrell's 7th graders this spring.
Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Ferrell coaches our Science Olympiad Team and is a member of the school's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee.
While we were all on break, work on our outdoor classroom began! The first steps of the construction include removing the old playground, but we know it will be well worth it when our amazing new learning and play space is completed at the end of this school year! Thanks to all those who have helped to make this dream become a reality for our students.
We are pleased to announce that we are continuing our 2020-21 Lunch Program for Early Childhood through 8th grade.

Please join us in welcoming Mr. Edwin Lee to the Independence faculty as a full-time substitute teacher. 👏
Mr. Lee is not new to Independence, however, and already knows many of our students. He has been a staff member of our Extended Day and Summer at Independence programs for the past several years.
To learn more about Mr. Lee please check out his mini-bio.

Ms. Waring's 7th grade English class recently completed a full unit on the Civil Rights Movement, which included reading John Lewis' autobiography, March: Book One, followed by a research project and presentation on a topic of their choice.
The work culminated in a creative hallway display board depicting a timeline of the Civil Rights Movement - one way we are recognizing Black History Month in our Middle School.
SUMMER AT INDEPENDENCE COMING SOON
Watch for registration to open soon for Summer at Independence Day Camp and Tot Camp. Our camps are open to all local families, in addition to Independence students.
Our plan is to hold on-campus camps with COVID-19 health and safety protocols similar to what we have used during this school year. Details will be published within the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned for more information!
