School law update:
As most parents know already, on September 10, 2020, the Wisconsin Supreme Court issued a temporary injunction blocking Public Health Madison and Dane County’s Emergency Order #9, which prohibited private and public schools in Dane County from having in-person classes until certain COVID-related benchmarks were met. The temporary injunction permits school districts and private schools to determine for themselves whether to continue remote learning or to bring students back, at least until the Wisconsin Supreme Court issues a decision on the merits of the case.

"What I Learned as a Parent of a Transgender Child"
As a pediatrician and mother, I thought I knew a lot about parenting. But I was blindsided by my daughter’s coming out as trans, and that first year was riddled with mistakes.

The new PPP loan forgiveness application was just released for businesses who borrowed $50,000 or less. If this applies to you, you will be surprised with how much they shortened the application. The U.S. Small Business Administration, in consultation with the Treasury Department, released this new form yesterday. This action streamlines the PPP forgiveness process to provide financial and administrative relief to America’s smallest businesses while also ensuring sound stewardship of taxpayer dollars. If you would like help with the forgiveness application, reach out to us on our website: https://qoo.ly/38kaen.

Mayo Clinic has assembled a list of pointers, detailing beneficial ways of notifying your children about your divorce. From how to initially break the news, to dealing with the aftermath, these points are important to consider.
As times are already turbulent, transparently breaking the news to your children as well as notifying key individuals of your divorce (your children’s teachers, doctors and/or school counselors) is crucial. A well-thought out plan will aid the mental health of your children in the midst of a hard transition.
Our divorce team, led by Sara Vanden Brook, balances compassion with strong advocacy. Check out the link here:

It is not just the servicemember who serves, but also their family. We know this to be true as we our watch our law partner, Attorney Sara Vanden Brook, support her husband, Travis (with two young children). Thank you, Travis and Sara, and all other veterans, for your commitment and sacrifice to something larger than yourself.
Happy Veterans Day, with deep gratitude to all servicemembers and their families.
President-Elect Joe Biden has published his LGBTQ+ policy. The policy states, “Joe Biden believes that every human being should be treated with respect and dignity and be able to live without fear no matter who they are or who they love.” Terms of the policy include diminishing discrimination, ensuring high-quality health care, and supporting LGBTQ+ youth. Take a deeper look into the promises Biden has made to the LGBTQ+ community. It should have always been this way.

The Law Center is proud of Attorney Nancy Winter for her work at the polls on Election Day last week. Democracy takes time and patience. It also requires Americans like Nancy and other poll workers throughout the country to make sure that every vote is counted. We are very proud of your courage and commitment, Nancy. (Here is Nancy working hard at home, as she has been since March, with her quarantine kitty.) Oh, yeah, Nancy also rescues animals left and right. And coaches the local track team for Special Olympics. Should we keep going? We could. We are so proud to be your law partners, Nancy!
“... we lead not by the example of our power, but by the power of our example.”
Congratulations to President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris on their historic victory this past weekend. We are so proud that a woman, and a woman of color, has finally been elected to the national executive office.
We are still deciding on a policy of whether all of our attorneys must wear black Chuck Taylors to in-person court appearances for the next four years.
More great news from the Biden Administration. From the President: "Today, I repealed the discriminatory ban on transgender people serving in the military. It’s simple: America is safer when everyone qualified to serve can do so openly and with pride."
The year of estate planning: The new presidential administration and the economic effects of COVID-19 might mean a change to the U.S. estate tax system. That means 2021 would be a good year to review your estate plan if you have one in place, or to get your first estate plan in place if you don't. Careful planning can reduce the amount of estate taxes your estate and family will face at your death. While preparing for illness, incapacity, and death can be emotionally difficult and a daunting to-do list item, it can also be a rewarding project to get your family’s finances and future in order. The Law Center is here to help and walk you through the steps.

The Law Center is closed today out of respect for and to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his relentless, peaceful pursuit of equality. In his honor, here are a few of our favorite quotes from Dr. King:
“I have decided to stick to love ... Hate is too great a burden to bear.”
“Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'”
“Let no man pull you so low as to hate him.”
And of course: “Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
