Good morning everyone! We wanted to give a brief update on the status of the firm. We've been working remotely and it definitely has its challenges. I want to express my gratitude to Melva & GeorgeAnn for adapting during these trying times and helping to keep the wheels of justice moving! For current clients, we are still trying to push your cases. There has and will continue to be delays in all proceedings. We've participated in several phone/Zoom meditations; managed to settled a few cases via email; and currently have several Zoom depositions lined up. As for trial settings, I don't expect any civil jury trials to take place before August at the very earliest. (This is an absolute optimistic guess! Not based on any data or information). Even if citizens are called back for jury duty, criminal cases will most likely have priority.
Another concern is whether citizens will even show up for jury duty. I strongly believe in our Constitutional right to trial by jury, but I can also understand citizens' reservations to responding to a jury summons and having to sit in close proximity to hundreds of strangers.
One option we may explore is trying to reach agreements with opposing counsel on waiving their right to a jury trial and agreeing to try cases to the Judge. Another option is arbitration with a 3rd party. Before any decision is made regarding waiving a client's right to trial by jury, many factors will be evaluated and agreed upon with the client before a decision like this would be made.
