The firm specialized in all types of personal injury and wrongful death actions on behalf of individual plaintiffs’ and their families. The partnership experienced a number of changes over the years and went by the name Schurmer & Drane for many years. Walter H. Drane, Esq., one of the founding partners, passed away in 1984; however, out of recognition for his service and contribution to the firm, his name remained for three decades after his passing. With the more recent partnership addition of Lauren Wood, the firm now goes by the name of Schurmer and Wood.⠀

In the final episode of Season 1, attorney Earl Schurmer talks about a very sad case involving a leg amputation.⠀

The client, a local exotic dancer, reported to her doctors that she was experiencing severe pain in her hip and back. The doctors dismissed her complaints, assuming she was simply attempting to get pain meds rather than looking into her complaints of severe pain. After months of making complaints to her doctors about severe hip pain, they finally did an x-ray, which revealed a large chondrosarcoma (cancerous mass) in the hip. By then it had developed too aggressively and required an entire leg amputation. A simple plain film x-ray of the hip would have revealed the cancer earlier on, possibly in time to treat it without an amputation, and later death.⠀

Most personal injury firms (including ours) take all cases on what’s called a contingency fee basis. What that means is means the attorney’s fees for representing the client will be deducted from the final personal injury settlement in the client's case—or from the damages award after a favorable verdict, in the rare event that the client's case makes it all the way to court trial. If the client doesn't get a favorable outcome (doesn't get any money, in other words), then the lawyer collects no fees.
