Before cutting and fitting we had draping. Now we have perfect amalgams of the two. This is a Pre-Fall design from Alexander McQueen from 2013. It is a wonderful synthesis of tailored and draped structure as it can be achieved now. The central garment is a rigidly formed black shape, that gains its potency from its precision. However, the massive draped sleeve-like forms owe more to the history we bear from the Greco-Roman past than it does from today.
That extraordinary fluidity of drape is helped by the chosen textile, a sublimely red silk velvet.
The result is a garment this is both out of time and entirely without connection to gender identity. This is a form that could be placed around any person with equal grace.
One of the advantages of the Covid lockdown is the development of technology for a multitude meetings, symposiums, conferences, classes, and now museum exhibitions. Here is a fabulous virtual exhibition of costumes from two excellent dramas on Netflix. If you haven't watched them, you should! Everything about this exhibition is incredible and it's free to see!

American ready to wear designer Claire McCardell was one of the most influential women working in the industry during the 1940s through the 60s. Her personal dictum that clothing at the ready to wear level could and should be not only functional, but stylish and adaptable made her one of the most popular RTW designers of her time. Working first through Townley Frocks, and later as her own label, McCardell often devised clothes that could be reconfigured into other forms, making them more broadly useful, as well as making them adaptable to differing body shapes.
This cotton day dress is from 1949 and gains all of its shaping and a good deal of its punch from the use of the stripes in a ways that box pleats them into position at the waist, creating an unbroken purple area that also gives the illusion of a smaller waistline.

Exciting News! As you may know, in 2019 I was accepted into the Advanced Fashion Design Program at The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. During this nine-month program I designed and created a twelve-piece menswear collection to be shown on the runway.
I am excited to announce that this runway show is happening in just a few short days! I don't think most museums would admit it when something bad happens, like when a mannequin falls in the middle of the night. No cause could be determined, however, I suspect one of the other mannequins pushed her in a pique of jealousy... (fortunately, this act of mannecide caused no harm to the vintage Lilli Ann suit.)

Jill Biden had many great style moments during her husband’s inauguration on January 20. For the evening celebration, she changed into a creamy white coat-and-dress ensemble by established designer Gabriela Hearst. The silk wool knee-length frock featured an organza neckline and sleeves embroidered with flowers from every state and territory, according to a statement from the label. 🌸🌼🌺
The matching cashmere coat featured more floral embellishment at the hem, with a quote from Benjamin Franklin embroidered on the inside lining, in tribute to Biden's long career as a college professor which she intends to continue as first lady. “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” Biden completed the outfit with elbow-length matching gloves and mask and a white corsage.
It turns out that corsage actually has some meaning. It’s part of a long tradition. Biden isn't the first first lady to wear a corsage on inauguration night; both Mamie Eisenhower and Betty Ford did it, according to Vogue, which means Biden is in fabulous company. love D'Artagnan.

I have posted before about the singular vision of Iris Van Herpen, and I doubtless will again. Her special genius, to my mind, is her consistent ability to translate some natural process, like wave action, breezes blowing, or sound waves resonating, into a physical reality that captures the essence of that motion for us to observe in another context. This is no less true of her most recent couture collection for S/S 2021. Take a good look at these. They are artful, fantastical, and creativity in full force.
