“We are the law!”
Town of New Canaan
In Praise of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Presiding Women.
This is not another opinion piece brimming with platitudes about Justice Ginsberg. Suffice it to say that I’ve read Jane Sherron De Hart’s biography and Justice Ginsberg’s autobiography and that I’ve followed her work for a good, long while.
This piece is about the model that Justice Ginsburg exemplified for the way that we conduct our historical business.
We men haven’t done a great job. Yes, we had Leonardo DaVinci, Michelangelo, Copernicus, Newton, Newton and Einstein, and lots of others.
There’s the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the American Revolution.
But, what if, before the Declaration of Independence was given final approval by all those proud, self-congratulating Colonial guys, they passed a copy to a gal for review and editing?
What if females were in charge on the eve of World War I or World War II? Would those eves have been anything more than standard, unremarkable ones for the human race?
If a we had a female Secretary of Defense instead of Robert McNamara on August 2, 1964 when the USS Maddox, (no relation as far as I know), exchanged fire with three North Vietnamese torpedo boats, would we have embarked on the same bloody near-decade in Southeast Asia?
Think about the stubborn, greedy, myopic refusal by men to allow women the right to vote. Think about race relations in the United States, the Civil Rights Movement, the generations of strife and wars in the Middle East.
If only we had some presiding women throughout history, if for no other reason, then as a counterbalance, but even better - to actually preside - to exercise guidance, direction and control.
It is certain that Ruth Bader Ginsburg was all of the wonderful, exceptional things that is being said about her. Let us find and cultivate more notorious RBG’s and cultivate her notorious ethos in ourselves.
Let us dissent, listen to dissent, forbear, persevere and look to the life of Justice Ginsberg as our guide.

Meet Jessica Kordas,
Attorney Kordas is an ambitious and dedicated trial lawyer. She has earned the reputation as a meticulously prepared and diligent advocate. She is always ready to fight for her clients, whether in court or settlement negotiations. She brings a natural gift for protecting others and great compassion to her representation and she believes deeply in standing up for the individual against corporations and large insurance companies.
Attorney Kordas has a unique professional background . Her experience includes managing and reorganizing medical facilities; researching, drafting preparing trading agreements for execution and assisting financial traders in maintaining licensing and credentials. This background is in addition to her legal experience that has included management of large scale criminal defense and life-altering injury litigation. Her background allows her the ability to view a case not only as a lawyer, but also through the eyes of a business person and medical clinician.
Licensed to practice in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, Attorney Kordas has had the benefit of appearing in multiple jurisdictions, including all state courts in Connecticut, and the Town, Village and Supreme Courts in New York.
Attorney Kordas earned her BGS from the University of Connecticut in Law and Society. She earned her Juris Doctorate from Pace University School of Law, where she graduated Cum Laude, all while working full time for a Greenwich financial firm. Attorney Kordas is a member of the National Association for Criminal Defense Lawyers, New York Bar Association, and Fairfield County Bar Association.
Having grown up in Norwalk, Connecticut, (Go Senators!), Jessica has successfully merged her love for the practice of law with her desire to give back to a community that has given her so much.

Lawyers and Court Phobia.
There are some Connecticut lawyers who have recently complained about having to go to court.
They fear infection. They cite the fact that judges and prosecutors are appearing in criminal matters while safely seated in their offices or a separate courtroom.
It’s not fair, these lawyers cry.
Here’s what I think.
Attorneys who took up the cause and represented HIV positive clients in the early 1980’s did so when extraordinarily little was known about the disease.
Can anyone imagine Nelson Mandela complaining that it was unfair to have to go to court and advocate for a client or cause?
What about Abraham Lincoln, or Frederick Douglass?
When they were brilliant, relentless trial lawyers, if Thurgood Marshall, Sandra Day O’Connor or Ruth Bader Ginsberg stopped over fear of illness, or things not being fair, the Apocalypse would have already inundated Creation.
Although it requires a certain resolve, desire, and even hunger, to practice trial law, the fact is that COVID-19 doesn’t require lawyers to be heroes.
Connecticut courts are sparsely populated. Social distance is not an issue, and we yearn for every chance that comes our way to go to court.
By the way, our marshals work and provide security in our courts every day.
Our children go to school every day. Bus drivers drive them to school, and their teachers teach them in person. And, teachers who are called to their profession will tell you that teaching remotely is a poor replacement for teaching in a classroom.
That's because it's impossible to deliver the best and highest impact remotely.
The power, conviction and just plain personality that authentic, trial lawyers bring to bear are diminished by computer screens.
Electronic, "virtual" advocacy is just that; it's virtual.
Our people deserve the absolute best that this Firm can deliver and as good as we are “electronically”, the real thing is better.
