Today was a HUGE day, Blaine graduated from speech! He has been going since he was 2, he has come so far and has worked so hard each week. Mrs. Glenda and her staff never gave up on Blaine, he was definitely a challenging case! We are so thankful for their dedication and love, without them Blaine wouldn’t be the amazing student he is today!
Enjoy a happy, safe & relaxing 4th of July! 🎆

Why do children always love the box more than the toy. Let them explore their creativity and work on their skills at the same time!

Unstructured and child led play with a boxes of all sizes works on a multitude of skills. It inspires creativity, imagination and problem solving. As the child climbs in and out of the box, places things in the box, stacks the boxes, pushes and pulls the box, he/she is working on important motor coordination and visual processing skills.
By offering the child crayons, clothes pins, tape, and assisting or supervising with scissors she can transform the box to address a variety of fine motor skills. Social and language skills are encouraged as you talk with your child while exploring the box. “Which is bigger or smaller?” “Can you fit inside?” “What are you making? A car? A house? A castle? A robot?” So grab a box (or a few of different sizes) and a variety of household materials and watch their imagination soar!

As seen on the #NBC show "George to the rescue," we're beyond excited to introduce a Fun Factory Sensory Gym onsite at our center. There are many benefits for speech and occupational therapy: help with fine motor skills, increased social skills, improved muscle strength, coordination, and balance. #speech #therapy #children
Fun & Functional Holiday Literacy
Holidays are a great time to have fun and focus on literacy with your children! One of my favorite books is "There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Turkey". Keep it simple, fun & functional. Use interactive props to keep kids' attention. Target your child's speech and language goals or just early literacy goals for Syntax (pronouns, verbs, 2-3 word utterances); request turning the page & turn taking; articulation with finding your target sounds in words and sentences, using clip art props and a box to sequence events in the story and practicing temporal concepts for (first, next, last, etc.); answering WH-questions and describing, comparing/contrasting events in the story. There are many holiday books for targeting literacy as well as speech and language and these are just a few of my favorites. Stay tuned for Christmas literacy tips! #speech #tips #literacy
Stuck inside? Combine music and movement with action songs for physical and cognitive benefits. Songs that require both hands and fingers work fine motor skills such as finger isolation, strengthening and coordination of movement in both hands. Songs with whole body movement help sensory processing and sustained attention. The repetition encourages motor memory, language skills, social skills, sequencing, and the ability to imitate and following directions.
Examples: Toddlers: Pat-a-cake, The Wheels on the Bus, If You Are Happy and You Know IT, Itsy Bitsy Spider, I’m a Little Teapot, Bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee, and The Hokey Pokey. Older kids: Chicken Dance, Cha Cha Slide, Cupid Shuffle, The Get Up, or a dance off!

Holiday speech-language and literacy
Holidays are the best time to focus on your child’s speech and language goals through literacy! Below are some of my favorite Christmas picks! Pinterest has hundreds of printable materials and crafts to accompany these stories to target sequencing, main character, story details, articulation, answering WH-questions, just to name a few. Have fun and be creative. Don’t forget to use lots of props to keep your little ones focused and engaged!
Holiday crafts are a good way to focus on motor skills, following directions, creativity and social skills. One of my fav crafts is building a Gingerbread House. Whether you bake it from scratch or purchase a kit, everyone can enjoy. Squeezing the frosting works on strengthening and bimanual skills. Having a child place the house pieces requires a steady hand so kids who struggle with motor control and/or tone may require hand over hand assistance. Retrieving the small candy pieces works on fine motor skills and pinch grip. Sometimes cutting skills can be included as well; such as cutting gum drops in half or cutting out a character from the box to add to the house display. Asking a child how he/she wants to decorate and where to place the candies addresses language skills. Taking turns to place the candies on the house addresses important social skills and peer interactions. You can also read a book that has a gingerbread house theme together as a family.
