Do Sleepy Drivers Have More Wrecks? Personal experience and common sense would tell you sleepy drivers have more wrecks than drivers who are wide awake. Studies have shown individuals who have not slept within the previous 18 hours have slower response times than individuals who are legally intoxicated. In today’s fast paced world physical and mental impairments and distractions are greatly contributing to the number and severity of auto collisions and work related injuries. Studies show more than half of those diagnosed with sleep apnea are not being treated for their sleepiness. Train wrecks, ship wrecks, thousands of auto collisions, and untold work related injuries are the result of sleepy individuals with sleep apnea. A recent study published in March 2016 Sleep Journal reported truck drivers with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who failed to adhere to treatment of their sleep apnea had a rate of preventable crashes 5 times higher than that of truckers without sleep apnea. They also reported drivers with apnea who were fully compliant with treatment of their apnea had a crash rate no different than that of the control group. The apnea treatment we provide is well accepted and very effective. Sleep Apnea! Has CPAP Failed You? If you were diagnosed with sleep apnea and prescribed a CPAP machine, but have stopped wearing it, the oral sleep apnea appliance may be for you. The oral appliance is a simple, patient-friendly treatment solution for eliminating snoring and sleep apnea. The oral appliance keeps your airway open and improves your breathing while you sleep. The unique design even allows you to fine-tune your treatment position at home to achieve maximum results. There is no machine, no mask, no hose to wake you up, and no air forcd through your noise or mouth all night. The oral sleep appliance holds the lower jaw forward opening the airway and is very effective in eliminating the apnea and the snoring. The sleep appliances are FDA registered and an allowable treatment by Medicare and most insurance companies. They are well accepted, and are most convenient, and cost effective treatment. As the world progresses, I believe home sleep studies and the oral sleep appliance will be the most commonly recommended and used sleep apnea treatment. It usually takes patients about a week to become accustomed to using the sleep appliance and fine tuning the adjustment. Nine out of ten patients wear the sleep appliance all night every night. How does nine out of ten compare to your use of CPAP? For a better night’s rest and a free Consumer Guide regarding the use of an oral appliance for the treatment of snoring and sleep apnea email me or call The TMJ Sleep Center or call 234-PAIN. We will be glad to answer your questions and provide you with the Consumer Guide concerning sleep apnea and snoring, or TMJ, migraines, headaches, or related subjects. Email drdwight@thetmjcenter.com
5 things wake you from deep sleep Light disrupts your sleep. You probably already know that when you stay up late under bright lights, you interrupt your body's natural sleep-wake cycle. The light tricks your brain into remaining awake in daylight mode. Scientists believe light from computer screens, iPads, TV’s, and phones, cause your brain think it's morning and emerge out of deep sleep. Pain also disrupts sleep. Just about any kind of pain signal sent by the brain causes arousals. TMJ disorder, migraines, muscle tension headaches, back pain, or arthritis, for example – lift you from the deep, restful sleep into lighter sleep or "microarousals." Disrupted Breathing (sleep Apnea) or decreased oxygen flow to the brain is interpreted by your brain as life threatening and sends a warning signal that wakes you up either fully or partially, preventing deep, restful sleep. Medications sometimes have side effects that trigger sleeplessness or interfere with deep sleep. Most common culprits: asthma medications, corticosteroids, blood pressure, caffeine, antidepressant, acid reflux and ulcers medications. It has also been found that beta-blockers interfere with the release of the sleep chemical melatonin. Depression: Fatigue is one of the most prevalent symptoms of depression. Many don't realize how closely related depression and poor sleep can be. Depression wreaks havoc with your natural biological rhythms and they have trouble getting out of bed in the morning. Their sleep is of poor quality; despite spending more hours in bed they don't feel well rested. Does you jaw ever get stuck? It is very common for the jaw to get stuck in various positions. The worst place to have your jaw stuck is in the open position. It sounds a bit humorous to have someone else’s mouth stuck open, but when you are the unfortunate individual with their mouth gapping ridiculously open, having difficulty talking, and dulling all over yourself for lack of being able to get your lips together and swallow it no longer be humorous. More frequently the jaw gets stuck closed or partially closed with the inability to open wide or with reduced ability to chew side to side. I assure you this is not normal and is an indication there is a degenerative condition going on in the jaw joints. When the jaw joints do not work properly the jaw muscles tighten up and get tender or right down painful. Many individuals describe the headache as a migraine because of the severity of the pain. Most of these headaches are not migraines at all and do not respond to migraine medications. The ear doctors see the greatest number of these patients because there are usually ear symptoms to go along with the tight tender muscles and headaches. The ear doctors usually find nothing wrong with the ears and may make a diagnosis of a TMJ disorder. Most of my patients have been through the headache, ear symptom experience. The cooling fall weather will increase the severity and frequency of these symptoms.
