Parents got the chance to safely socialize, grab coffee and outfit their kids in cute Village Viking gear! As a sophomore at Village, Dana decided to try crocheting and found she loved it! With a heart for philanthropy, she founded a non-profit called Crochet Children’s Fund, selling the stuffed animals she crochets and donating proceeds to local children’s hospitals like Texas Children's Hospital. Today as a senior, Dana has donated almost $7,000 and shared over 300 handmade stuffed animals with local children’s hospitals! Today on World Kindness Day, we’re sharing a student story from Dana Magana, who started her own non-profit, the Crochet Children’s Fund. Dana has donated $7,000 from the sale of her handmade stuffed animals to the Texas Children’s Hospital and other smaller pediatric clinics with long-term patients. The Village School is an international community committed to give of themselves generously as they prepare to lead the next generation into an ever-changing world. Dana, we’re proud to call you a Viking!

Speaking of radical creativity, we’re excited to announce one of many keynote speakers joining us on January 22 is Richard Turere! Richard is the CEO of the Lion Light organization and the young entrepreneur behind the famous lion deterrent lights. Invented when Richard was just 11, Lion Lights is widely recognized for promoting a sustainable, peaceful coexistence between humans and wildlife. Richard is recognized as the youngest patent inventor and he received the Anzisha Prize award in 2018 and a Young National Geographic Explorer in 2020. One of the unique social impact projects you’ll get to see on Innovation Day include Elcove Green, an environmentally conscious company! A Village Viking since age 5, Anastacia Yefimenko is now a senior and founder of her own company. She provides a variety of cleaning products including whole home starter kits, all-purpose cleaners sets and bathroom cleaner starters, aiming to replace single-use plastic bottles often found in grocery stores. “Being in such a positive environment helped me focus on creating my business and schoolwork at the same time, knowing that I will always have support,” said Anastacia. After dealing with harsh allergies, she wanted to eliminate chemicals by creating toxin-free products that save you money while supporting a cleaner planet. Anastacia is a great example of how our Village students use innovative thinking to give generously to the community. As the co-founders of PiezoPace, they developed a piezoelectric transducer sleeve for motorized prosthetics which allows amputees to regain full usability of their limbs. Throughout the month of February, we will engage our Vikings in topics celebrating Black achievements in history, STEM, literature and the arts. During our check-in and advisory periods, we will share daily Black history facts and videos honoring the culture and heritage that influenced the world around us. Our hallway music during passing periods will feature songs from the Harlem Renaissance jazz to the evolution of hip hop. As we continue to honor incredible Village Women, this week we're highlighting Jennifer Thomas, Dean of Students for Village High School. Jenn recently wrote a children’s book focused on the difficulty siblings face when one goes off to college. Her book, See You in Tomorrow, is based on her son’s real-life experience when his older brother left for school. The story follows the brothers as they prepare to part ways. The book was illustrated by another awesome Village Woman, student Doris Mikulek, class of 2020.
