BENADRYL CHALLENGE
"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning that taking higher than recommended doses of the common over-the-counter (OTC) allergy medicine diphenhydramine (Benadryl) can lead to serious heart problems, seizures, coma, or even death. We are aware of news reports of teenagers ending up in emergency rooms or dying after participating in the “Benadryl Challenge” encouraged in videos posted on the social media application TikTok."

Happy Autumn Everyone!
It is a strange seasons this year.
How do we distinguish between:
- SARS-Cov-2 infection
- Hay fever (fall allergies)
- Asthma symptoms?
It is difficult sometimes, even for physicians, to know for sure, as there is a significant overlap in symptoms. It becomes a challenge at work or school, and your cough or sniffles may result in some sidelong looks. Few key things to consider:
- Do you have a history of allergies this time of the year and are your symptoms consistent with how you felt last season?
- Fever, abdominal symptoms, muscle aches and feeling very run down are NOT typical of allergies or asthma.
- On the other hand loss of smell/taste, diarrhea, fatigue, muscle aches and fever are more common with infections.
- Don't delay to treat your allergies and asthma this season. With prevention you are less likely to miss school or work due to these concerning symptoms.
Stay healthy and enjoy the cooler weather!

Starting in December, we will offer a narrow-band-UVB treatment for ECZEMA in a small area such as face, hands or feet. This is a non-pharmacologic option for those with difficult to treat rash.
Phototherapy or “therapy with light” uses the beneficial effect of light waves for several skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne, and atopic dermatitis. The use of phototherapy began in the 1890s. UV radiation targets inflammatory cells on the skin and protects the skin by inducing thickening which then limits skin reactions and prevents the entry of external allergens or irritants. UV also prevents skin colonization by Staphylococcus aureus and Pityrosporum orbiculare. In particular, narrow-band-UVB radiation has been proved to have antimicrobial affects.
Phototherapy is generally considered to be safe and well tolerated. Please call us if you would like to learn more.

"Increased risk of food allergy exists in infants if they meet the following criteria: mild to moderate eczema; family history of atopy in either or both parents; or 1 known food allergy."
"The guideline recommends infants should be introduced to peanut- and egg-containing products starting at 6 months of life but not before 4 months of life (...) there should be no deliberate delays in the introduction of other potential allergenic complementary foods, including soy, wheat, sesame, fish and shellfish, or tree nuts."
