Happy Friday! We hope you had a great week. Here are some cute puppies and kittens to brighten your weekend #familyfridays
Your pet’s health is our #1 priority! October is National Pet Wellness Month, and we want to make sure your pet is living their best life! Call us today to schedule their next wellness exam.
Did you know that Vet Tech Appreciation week is held annually in October? This week was created to bring awareness to the profession and how vital technicians are to animal care. Here at TMSAC, we like to use that week, the whole month in fact, to highlight and recognize ALL of our support staff!! Our doctors would not be able to provide the amazing care to your pet if it were not for the daily support of our CSRs, Veterinary Assitants, Veterinary Technicians, Groomers, and Kennel Staff. Throught this month, we will be highlighting our amazing staff and all they do for us and your pets.
Today is World Rabies Day, which is one of the largest global awareness days! This year’s theme is “End Rabies: Collaborate, Vaccinate”. The Global Alliance for Rabies control currently has a 10-year goal to end human deaths from dog rabies. In order to do so, we need to continue collaboration at the international, national and local levels to eliminate rabies – especially keeping in mind that it’s a disease that knows no borders. We can all do our part with the goal of eliminating human rabies deaths by remembering to keep our dog’s rabies vaccine current. Note, that in WI, there is currently a law that all dogs MUST be vaccinated for Rabies. For more information on World Rabies Day and how you can help, please visit https://rabiesalliance.org/world-rabies-day?gclid=EAIaIQobChMImer1upGC7AIVX_7jBx2-nQypEAAYASAAEgKKifD_BwE

They stay with your pet for the entire appointment and help the Doctor with anything they need to care for your pet. They have quickly adapted to curbside service and do an amazing job daily! Our first featured vet assitant is Steph. Steph has spent the majority of her life around animals. She grew up on a hobby farm in West Bend where she spent all of her time caring for her horses, sheep, dogs, and cats. Tanner thinks that everyday is National Cat Day, even if the calander only says that it is today. This holiday was created in 2005 to bring awareness to how many shelter cats are looking for homes and to encourge cat owners (although we all know the cat owns us) to celebrate thier unconditional love for thier cat. So in that vain, please share all the cute pictures of your cats in the comment section!
Today is National Chocolate Day, just in time for Halloween! And as much as us humans love chocolate, we need to remember that chocolate is TOXIC to our furry companions. A Covid Puppy, what is that? This is a term coined by pet trainers to describe a puppy that was adopted during the pandemic that exhibits signs of nervousness and anxiety, mainly due to lack of socialization and proper training shortly after adoption. While the world has changed drastically in the last year the critical needs of a puppy before 5 months of age have not. When a puppy misses out in these important experiences behavior issues, many times linked to nervousness and anxiety, creep up. But it is never too late to take your pet to training classes. January is National Train Your Dog month, making it a perfect time to sign you and your dog up for a class. There are many training facilities in our area, but we recommend using a facility with methods based in positive reinforcement training.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, we want to send a loving THANK YOU to our special someone's – YOU! We can’t say thank you enough to all of our clients that have been with us through the years. You and your pets are the reason why we show up to work each day, and we definitely feel the love from you! Thank you!
Did you know that roughly 6.5 million (!!!) animals enter U.S. animal shelters every year? Of that number, 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. This is why spay/neuter is so important, to cut down on pet overpopulation!
Here is a great photo that shows what your pet's teeth look like under the gumline! Did you know that 30% of dental disease is UNDERNEATH the gumline?! This is why we need anesthesia to perform our dental procedures---in order to take x-rays of what is happening under the gumline, check for pocketing, clean under the gumline, and then if disease is present, provide treatment (usually by extracting the tooth). Non-anesthetic dental procedures are becoming more common these days, but they are not safe! During these procedures nothing is done to address the health of the tooth below the gumline, which can lead to more advanced disease in the future.
Did you know that each kitten in a litter could have a different father? 😱 This is because queens (aka an unspayed female cat) are induced ovulators---this means that everytime they are mounted by a male, they will release an egg to be fertilized, which is why litters can be as large as 12 kittens. If left unspayed and neutered those kittens will create many more kittens and will go on expotenially. This is one of the many reasons we recommend spay and neuter. #spayandneuter

Our doctors are often asked what can be done at home to prevent dental disease. Just like in humans, daily brushing and (semi) annual dental cleanings are the cornerstone of pet dental health. But, what happens if you have a spicy pet who won't let you brush thier teeth? That's where dental chews and rinses come into play, but not all these products are created equal. In humans, we look for the ADA seal of approval. In veterinary medicine, we have the VOHC. Click below to read more about this organization and VOHC approved dental products for pets! http://vohc.org/

Thiensville Fire Department February 13 at 5:40 PM · This morning we were dispatched to the report of a subject stuck in the water in the river. Due to the initial reports, the incident was upgraded to the Full Still to receive additional assistance from the Mequon Fire Department, Cedarburg Fire Department, Village of Grafton Fire Department, North Shore Fire/Rescue, Port Washington Fire/Rescue, Germantown Wisconsin Fire Department, and Jackson Fire Department. The subject was quickly located and crews worked to bring them back to safety. The subject was trying to free a goose that was stuck on the ice. We were informed that many citizens have been concerned about the goose and had even named it Clayton (Manning). We are pleased to report the goose was recovered and has been turned over the the Wisconsin Humane Society in Milwaukee for further evaluation and care. A special thanks to DC Zellmann for all of his assistance with the incident. As well as the Wisconsin DNR, Thiensville Police Department, Thiensville-Mequon Small Animal Clinic, and Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office for all of your help! It is with a heavy heart that we share this news with you. Earlier this week our staff said goodbye to clinic cat Gretel. Gretel first came to the clinic in January 2017 as a patient from a local rescue organization. Gretel was not eating and as a result was hospitalized in the clinic with a feeding tube. During that month, the staff became very bonded to Gretel and upon her recovery she officially became our clinic cat. Over the years, she provided staff with assistance while writing records, sassy meows as they were taking too long to feed her, and occasional cuddles. Gretel preferred to be in the general vicinity of humans, but was not one for cuddles. She was often found sitting in “her chair” in the treatment room. If someone else was sitting in it, she would meow until they got up and then she got settled in. Recently, Gretel began to not feel well. Our doctors sadly found that she had an inoperable oral cancer-squamous cell carcinoma. Due to this, Gretel was euthanized earlier this week. She will be dearly missed.

March is Pet Poison Prevention Month! Did you know that there are two pet poison hotlines for animals? We have both the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center and Pet Poison Helpline available to us. These hotlines are the staffed by veterinary professionals that specialize in toxicology and have the most up to date information on toxic doses and treatment. If your pet ingests something concerning, one of the mainstays of treatment is calling one of the Poison Hotlines. These hotlines will help determine if what your pet ingested is actually toxic and if veterinary treatment is needed. If treatment is needed, these hotlines will also guide the DVM in proper care and treatment and if this treatment can be done on an outpatient basis at our clinic, or if inpatient hospitlaization at Lakeshore or WVRC would be necessary. During the rest of the month, we will be featuring resrouces from these two organizations about the most common poisonings, etc
Stay tuned this month as we bring you wonderful resources and knowledge about what to do if your pet ingests something toxic.
