Since we've been getting a lot of these types of questions re: motorcycle coverage, we thought we would share.....
Is A Customized Motorcycle Covered By Insurance?
Standard collision coverage and comprehensive coverage on a motorcycle insurance policy likely do not cover custom parts, accessories or features that you've added to your bike. Some policies may have limited coverage for custom parts — for example, up to $1,000 for damage caused by things like hail or theft. To help better protect your custom bike, you may want to consider adding optional equipment coverage to your policy.
Custom Parts and Equipment Coverage---
Custom parts and equipment coverage helps pay to repair or replace aftermarket additions to your bike if they are damaged or destroyed in a covered loss. The coverage reimburses you for a covered claim based on the parts' actual cash value (aka their depreciated value).
Each coverage on your policy, including custom parts and equipment coverage, has a limit. The coverage limit is the maximum amount your insurer will pay for a covered claim. Costs that exceed your coverage limit are your responsibility. For example, if you have a coverage limit of $2,000, but your damaged custom equipment takes $4,500 to replace, you'd have to pay the balance out of your own pocket.
Custom parts and equipment coverage typically does not have a deductible, which is the amount you pay up front toward a covered claim. However, you will have to pay the deductible on your collision coverage or comprehensive coverage as part of your claim.
If you have one-of-a-kind parts like crash bars, custom wheel or other aftermarket accessories, talk to a local agent about adding custom parts and equipment coverage to your motorcycle insurance policy.
