The COVID vaccine is here. Prairie Lakes Healthcare System has worked with the South Dakota Department of Health for several months in preparation of the vaccine and will begin dispersing the vaccine throughout the region during phase 1 for frontline healthcare workers.
Even though vaccinations began this week, it is essential that all people continue to engage in social distancing, wear a mask, and practice good hand hygiene as we continue our efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID.

Their commitment helped Prairie Lakes disperse the vaccine to Brookings Health System, Huron Regional Medical Center, and Madison Regional Health System. Recipe is a lower calorie option with savings of about 100 calories from not using alcohol for mixing. Diet ginger beer could be used if wanting to save more on calories.
1. Fill a 12 oz cup about ¾ full of ice
2. Squeeze fresh lime juice over ice.
3. Add 3oz of Club Soda
4. Then add 3oz cranberry juice
5. Fill rest of glass with ginger beer (about 6oz)
6. Squeeze fresh lime wedge.
7. Stir.
8. Garnish with a fresh lime wheel and a few fresh cranberries.

A dialysis nurse at Prairie Lakes is responsible for the delivery of patient care to the dialysis patient, evaluates and updates plan of care according to unit standards, demonstrates understanding, knowledge and compliance of department policies/procedures, and standards which includes veni-puncture dialysis technique, equipment problem solving and lab specimens, assesses and provides education to patients and family, and performs related duties as required.
Candidates must have graduated from an approved school of nursing, be currently licensed or eligible for licensure in Minnesota and South Dakota, and we prefer one year experience in Medical/Surgical nursing; however, willing to train qualified applicants.

We are proud to announce the Young Athlete Walk-in Clinic, a free clinic to screen student athletes with sports injuries and concerns. Elementary through high school-aged students can receive a free athletic screening for orthopedic injuries or concerns by Jeff Haufschild and Michelle Leitheiser, Certified Athletic Trainers and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists.
The Young Athlete Walk-in Clinic is free and no appointments are needed starting Monday, February 22. The clinic will be held weekly on Mondays 11 am – 1 pm in Prairie Lakes Rehab. Severe sports injuries, such as a head injury, high pain, or bone fracture, should be seen by the ER immediately.

Please make sure you are available for both dates before signing up.

Next week’s mass vaccination event will be Thursday, April 1 at the Codington County Extension Complex. An appointment is required to receive a vaccine. Registration will open on Friday, March 26 at 10:00 a.m. at www.prairielakes.com/covidvaccine.

The COVID vaccine allocated by the Department of Health for April 1 is 800 doses of Moderna. Everyone who signs up for the April 1 event will automatically be signed up to receive their second dose on Thursday, April 29.
South Dakota adults ages 18 and older who are in groups 1A - 1E may schedule a vaccine appointment. Group 1E members are "Critical Infrastructure Workers". Areas include water and wastewater, energy, finance, food service, food and agriculture, legal, manufacturing, shelter and housing, transportation and logistics, information technology, and communications.

“Text-to-9-1-1 should only be used in an emergency when you can’t call 9-1-1,” said Craig Price, cabinet secretary for the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. “The Text-to-9-1-1 option would be good to use if speaking out loud would put the caller in danger or if the caller is deaf, hard-of-hearing or speech impaired.”
