The Internal Revenue Service announced today the official estate and gift tax limits for 2021: The estate and gift tax exemption is $11.7 million per individual, up from $11.58 million in 2020. That means an individual could leave $11.7 million to heirs and pay no federal estate or gift tax, while a married couple could shield $23.4 million.
But what if former vice president Joe Biden is elected president? That could mean an end to the staggeringly high estate and gift tax exemption amount enacted as part of President Donald Trump’s signature tax overhaul. Trump’s tax overhaul doubled the then-$5 million per person base level exemption amount to $10 million, from 2019 through year-end 2025, with a flat tax rate of 40%. (The $10 million is indexed for inflation; that accounts for the $11.7 million figure.) Republican death tax foes vow to make the doubled exemption amount permanent. By contrast, criticizing the Trump tax cut as a giveaway to the wealthy and citing economic inequality, Biden has proposed restoring estate and gift taxes to their 2009 level: $3.5 million per person for the estate tax, $1 million for the gift tax, and a top rate of 45%.

Retail sales in the United States declined 0.7% month over month in December, below all but two of the 70 forecasts in Bloomberg’s consensus survey (US Census Bureau). The weak retail sales data reveals the effects of increasing restrictions in Q4 2020 to curb the spread of COVID-19. This may embolden policymakers when they begin debating President-elect Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus proposal.

We have been here before about 20 years ago. Although the faces have changed, the service and attention to detail are excellent. Everyone is helpful and they offer a training online for making a trust and other future planning that is very helpful. Also I was given a list of information needed and what documents I needed for my appointment. By doing my homework, everything was a breeze. US retail sales rose 5.3% month over month in January according to the US Census Bureau, ahead of Bloomberg consensus forecasts of 1.1%. The surge in retail sales was the highest in seven months, a strong response following December’s 1% decline as fresh stimulus checks helped spur consumer demand following the headwinds caused by rising COVID-19 cases at the end of 2020. Further, strong January retail sales should remove much of the risk for the US economy to stall in the first quarter of 2021.

In the past few days, business news has been dominated by jitters around your favorite concept from Economics 101. No, not how to flirt with people in the library using only eye contact—inflation.
When we say jitters, we mean market shifts. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note is at 1.36%, a big jump from the 0.9% where it started the year (remember, higher yield = lower price = investors are dumping their bonds), while copper and oil have spiked. Translation: Investors think economic growth is about to hit ludicrous speed and they're running for cover in assets that hedge against inflation.
But many economists say there's no need to worry - Including the ones who actually oversee the economy. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Fed Chair Jerome Powell both said in recent days they're not worried about inflation, and Powell signaled yesterday he'll keep interest rates low where businesses want them. These soothing words helped stocks mount their big comeback yesterday. Both officials also called for more spending to ease the economic hardships Americans are facing, noting that millions of people are still unemployed.
If you use Facebook, it can serve as a key part of your legacy—and one you will likely want to protect following your death. With this in mind, as with any other digital asset you own, you should include your social media profiles and credentials within your estate plan.
Facebook, in particular, offers a special function called a “legacy contact” that allows you name someone to manage and control the activities of your social media account after you have passed on.

Managing Your Digital Afterlife
At the time of your death, Facebook allows your account to be “memorialized,” so friends and family can gather and share memories of you and your life. To memorialize your account, someone will need to provide proof to Facebook of your death and complete a special request form. Facebook accounts can be memorialized regardless of whether or not a legacy contact has been selected.
Once your account has been memorialized, only confirmed friends can see your profile or find it in a search. Your memorialized profile will no longer appear in friend suggestions, nor will anyone receive birthday updates or other account notifications.
When your account is memorialized, the word “Remembering” will be added next to your profile name. Depending on your privacy settings, friends and family members can post content and share memories on your timeline. A memorialized account is locked, so its original content cannot be altered or deleted, even if someone has your password information.
What Your Legacy Contact Can Do:
If you have designated a legacy contact, once your account has been memorialized, that individual will be able to manage your Facebook account based on the permissions you have granted him or her.
Your Facebook legacy contact can perform many functions, including:
Write a pinned post for your profile to share a final message on your behalf or provide information about your memorial service.
View posts, even if you had set your privacy to ‘Only Me’.
Decide who can see and who can post tributes on your memorialized profile.
Delete tribute posts.
Change who can see posts that you are tagged in.
Remove tags of you that someone else has posted.
Respond to new friend requests.
Update your profile picture and cover photo.
Request the removal of your account.
Download a copy of what you’ve shared on Facebook if you have this feature turned on.
What Your Legacy Contact Cannot Do:
It is important to point out that your legacy contact does not have unlimited control over your account. For example, your legacy contact cannot take the following actions:
Log into your account as you.
Read your direct messages.
Remove any of your friends or make new friend requests.
Alternatively, if you do not want your Facebook account to continue after your death, you can choose to have your account permanently deleted upon your passing.
