Mason & Hamlin "AA" grand piano restored by Thomson Piano Works
Here's a little promo for my latest restoration project, the Mason & Hamlin "AA."
It's ready to play! I have been working for several months rebuilding a Mason & Hamlin Model "AA" grand piano refinishing it in satin ebony.
Built in 1929 in the original Mason & Hamlin factory in Boston, MA, before the company was sold and moved to East Rochester, NY, this 6'4" piano has all the design features that made this model instrument a direct competitor with the Steinway & Sons models "A"(6'1",) and "B" (6'10"). And this particular piano is no exception.
I have used the finest available materials in my restoration from the 5-ply solid maple Bolduc pinblock supporting the strings, to hammers made from felt produced by the Wurzen factory in Germany - who has recently re-introduced the Weickert hammer it manufactured for these instruments before World War ll.
And the results are impressive. The touch of the keys has been fine adjusted, the keys re-weighted for proper balance, the hammers voiced for optimal tonal clarity - all making this an extremely satisfying instrument to play. And it looks pretty good too with it's new satin ebony finish.
I’m making progress restoring this Mason & Hamlin AA built in Boston in 1929. Some consider this make and model the best American production piano ever made. So far I have replaced the pinblock, restored the soundboard, and refinished the case in satin ebony. Now it’s ready to be restrung.
Armed a ready for work in a COVID-19 world
A customer wanted a player system installed in their newly restored Steinway & Sons grand piano. Here's a short video of how the system works. Enjoy.
