Cat Breed of the Month: Himalayan Himalayan cats are often considered a sub-breed of the Persian. This is because the cats are considered largely identical, with the exception of their striking blue eyes and the color points deliberately bred into them by mixing Persians with Siamese cats as far back as the 1930s. They tend to be intelligent, social, and sweet. They have the short legs of Persian cats, but the Siamese in them makes them a bit more active in nature. The points on their luxurious coat come in a variety of colors, including seal, lilac, blue, and red. Daily brushing is a must to keep their fur from becoming matted. Dog Breed of the Month: Irish Setter The Irish Setter is a breed of gundog that was bred in particular to hunt birds. When they've located the scent of a bird, they will hold a pointing position to indicate the direction it is hiding. Though a very active breed, they do well with children and other pets, and they crave human companionship. Positive training is relatively easy due to their high intelligence. However, they are best kept occupied with some kind of job to do, or they may become bored and destructive to pass the time. Despite this, Irish Setters make good therapy dogs due to their excellent temperament. This dog's coat is long, silky, and red or chestnut in color. They weigh between 55 and 75 pounds on average. Irish Setters are a notably healthy breed, but possible health problems that could occur include hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and hyperthyroidism. Their deep chest can also make them susceptible to gastric torsion ("bloat"). Their typical life expectancy is eleven to twelve years. Do you have an Irish Setter in your life? Cat Breed of the Month: Havana Brown The Havana Brown was created in England by breeding domestic black cats with Siamese cats during the 1950s. It was either named due to sharing their chestnut coat color with the Havana rabbit, or with the Cuban Havana cigar. Even their noses and whiskers are brown in color, with only their green eyes standing out! While a very affectionate cat, they tend to attach themselves more to a single person or family. They're active and lively cats, but with toys, a scratching post, and companionship they can thrive even in smaller home environments. Havana Browns are relatively healthy cats with few inherited concerns, though their Siamese heritage makes them a bit prone to gingivitis. Their average lifespan is between nine and fifteen years. Dog Breed of the Month: Siberian Husky Siberian Huskies are medium sized dogs with a thick double coat suitable for the cold of their native Siberia. A working breed, they are very active and have been used as sled dogs, although in more recent years they've picked up popularity as a companion dog. Like Samoyeds and American Eskimos, Huskies are part of the Spitz family of dogs. Black and white is the most common coat pattern, but Siberian Huskies can also be red and white, gray and white, or straight white. Eyes can be either blue or brown, and some may have one of each color, which is acceptable in this breed's standard. Ranging from 35 to 60 pounds, on average they live between 12 and 14 years. The breed has a tendency to roam if left unattended, and as they have a strong pack mentality they require a great deal of interaction with their family. As long as their energy is expended with proper exercise and training, these dogs can make wonderful family pets. Do you have a husky in your life? Show us in the comments!

Dog Breed of the Month: Schipperke The Schipperke is a small breed hailing from Belgium back in the 16th century. They're sometimes referred to as "little black foxes" due to their spitz-like appearance and headstrong, mischievous temperament. They're very intelligent, but that stubbornness sometimes means they decide to do what benefits them most rather than listening to their owner. That said, with proper training they excel in obedience and agility. Schipperkes are healthy dogs that live on average 13-15 years. They stay between 6 and 19 pounds, but they're by no means a lapdog. These pups need plenty of exercise and a fenced-in yard to keep themselves entertained! Do you have a Schipperke in your life? Cat Breed of the Month: Pixie-bob Pixie-bobs are a Washington state breed that was said to be a mix of a domestic cat and a bobcat. DNA tests have suggested that there is actually no bobcat in them, but nonetheless they definitely have the look! Pixie-bobs are fairly large, reaching 11 pounds or more. Coloring is similar to that of a bobcat, and they can have either short or long hair.
