You have likely all heard that the Governor announced an Executive Order yesterday requiring Minnesotans to wear face coverings in all public indoor spaces and businesses starting this Saturday, July 25th. This order was put in place to slow the spread of Covid-19. While this order remains in place, we want to clarify a few things about law enforcement involvement with face coverings.
First, it is not our desire to cite you for face covering violations and we will not be out looking for violators.
Second, please do not call our office if you see someone without a face mask. The order does exempt people with certain disabilities and/or medical or mental health issues from wearing masks. While it may be easy to assume that someone is deliberately defying the mask order, we oftentimes don’t know what personal reasons may prevent them from being able to follow it. Wearing a mask is also a personal decision and we shouldn't be critical of those who do.
Third, please do not confront someone if you see them with or without a face covering. Getting in someone’s face about their lack of a mask violates the spirit of this order by not adhering to social distancing, and it will likely not convince someone to put a mask on, anyway. If you own or work for a business, we ask that you use common sense and follow your employer’s policies if you’re confronted with this situation.
Finally, we ask that you be kind and considerate of each other as we navigate this mask business. Many stores and public areas are mandated to require masks to remain open and to allow those employees to continue working. They're simply doing their jobs to require masks.
