For the first time in U.S. history, John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon met in a Chicago studio for the first televised presidential debate. Kennedy, a Democratic senator of Massachusetts, emerged the apparent winner, partly owing to his greater ease before the camera. Nixon’s appearance improved in the three subsequent debates, but on November 8, Kennedy beat him 303 to 219 electoral votes.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1964, Martin Luther King, Jr. won a Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent resistance to racial prejudice in America. At the age of 35, he was the youngest person to ever receive the award.
King received his doctorate degree in theology and in 1955 organized the first major protest of the civil rights movement: the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott. Influenced by Mohandas Gandhi, he advocated nonviolent civil disobedience to racial segregation. The peaceful protests he led through the American South were often met with violence, but King and his followers persisted, and their nonviolent movement gained momentum.
In King’s Nobel Prize acceptance speech he said, “…Genuine brotherhood and peace is more precious than diamonds or silver or gold.”
