A message from Tom, owner of Tom's When we support small businesses, we support our community. When COVID changed all our lives, our community changed as well. While large, big box stores remained open, and had their best quarters ever, local small businesses were shuttered, closed, unable to do business. They are now struggling and they need our help. Small businesses are the heart of our community. They define who we are, set us apart from all other communities. They are what make us unique to ourselves. They define us. When the community is in need, it is our small businesses that answer the call. When a donation is needed for a local high school sports team, a little league, an arts group, a fundraiser for a sick child, when local charities are in need, it is our small businesses that step up to the plate and deliver. The large faceless corporations, have headquarters someplace else and don't feel connected to us, don't understand the needs of our community. Small businesses donate their time, their energy, their money, their expertise, their merchandise and participate in all aspects of our community, without hesitation. They live here, they know us, they are a part of us. When doing business with a local shop or restaurant, we are employing local people, paying local taxes, helping to support our families. They pay taxes to support our local schools, first responders, our parks, our neighborhoods, our infrastructure, all of our community services. When money is spent at a local business, a huge percentage of it stays right here with us, in our city, town, village and county. It does not leave the area to go and support some other far away city. It stays here, with us, an investment in our community. Their employees and owners live here, work here, raise their families here. The salaries paid help local residents to put a roof over their head, and food on the table.. they create jobs, and more jobs. Our small, locally owned businesses need our help, now, more than ever. The next time you need to purchase something, don't click on that Amazon button, forget that search online, don't go to the big box store or the national chain of restaurants. Instead, visit a local shop, business, restaurant. Make that conscious choice, not just once, but whenever possible, over and over again. They need our support if they are to be able to remain open. We, at Tom’s are very fortunate. We are doing well. Our community has always supported us very strongly and they continue to throughout this difficult time. Not all small businesses are as fortunate as us. Not all are doing well. They are struggling. So when choosing a restaurant, stop over at The Lost Dog, Little Venice, Kampai, eve our local subways are locally owned and operated. When you need furnishings for your home, skip the Wayfair button and stop down and see Brad Kirby, At America’s Attic. Need new furniture or appliances? Pass by Best Buy and go to Olum's, Ellis Brothers, Raymour & Flanagan. And of course, if you need a gift or some of the best gourmet coffee on the planet, we would love to see you here at Tom’s When we support small, locally owned businesses, we support our community in many, many ways.. So please, shop local, the community you save will be your own.

Still doing our 20% off pre-holiday sale.🎅 Everyone this is Emily. 👋 She's been at Tom's since July of 2019. Her mug is part of our Homann pottery line and her favorite coffee in her favorite mug is Amaretto. She's pictured near the food/chocolate bars because she loves both of those things and we could not agree more with her choice. Emily works at a local produce farm during the day then comes here to work a couple nights and frankly we just don't know how she does it, and does it so well. She also makes our beautiful baskets and jerky bouquets. She's always willing to do whatever needs to be done and her deadpan delivery is always appreciated. ❤️ Stop on down to say hi to Emily, mention this post and receive 20% off your total purchase.
A message from Tom, the owner of Tom's: Please share this post. Veterans Day, and the holiday season always makes me think of my life. The gratitude I feel. How fortunate I am, freedom, a wonderful family, my wife, my children, friends, businesses, a supportive community towards our business: Tom’s. Gratitude, that’s what I feel, gratitude. Those thoughts brought my mind back to a recent trip to Washington DC. I love Washington, it was a cool crisp day with blue sky and sunshine, no leaves on the trees... I always visit the Capitol and the Mall. I’m taken by the vastness, the openness, the memorials. The Washington Monument, so majestic... The centerpiece... It towers above them all. The “Father” of our country memorialized in such a way... Bigger than life. Sacrifice... The WW2 Memorial. A new addition to the Mall, recognizing and memorializing all of those who served. All of those who died fighting, all of those who sacrificed so much to restore freedoms around the world. When I walk around it I can feel the history, almost see the men and women who went to fight this war. My dad was one who joined. He was a slight man, 6’3” thin as a beanpole maybe 120 lbs... They were not going to let him in, as he did not weigh enough, so he ate dozens of bananas trying to “make weight” so he too could go and join the fight for freedom. He was a gentle soul, one would never expect that he would be one to go to war and fight, but everyone went. Everyone answered the call. He was from a small town Forest City, Son of Pennsylvania coal miners, great grandson of an Irish immigrant who came to this country in search of freedom and a better way of life. He survived this war, hundreds of thousands of our people did not... Tens of millions around the world did not survive it... The war ended... The good guys win, and somehow humanity marched forward. Then it is on to the Korean War Memorial, a moving place. Bronze statues of raincoat covered soldiers trudging through rain, fog, mist... A “lost” look in their eyes... All representative of the war they went to fight in a foreign land. Then onto the Martin Luther King Monument. Celebrating the struggles for freedom and racial equality in our country... Then The Lincoln Memorial. The man who saved the Union... Saved our country from being torn in two forever. Then onward to the Vietnam Memorial... It's a large “V” shaped, shiny black granite wall... Sloped into the landscape, with the names of some 55,000+ of our people who died in this terrible, tragic war... I entered by walking down the sloped path... The wall is only a half a foot high at this point, and has just a few names in the first row... A few more steps down, and as the walkway goes down, the granite also rises up. The rows of names become longer and longer, more and more names... 100 names high, then 200 hundred, then more and more and more. The wall gets higher and higher until I get to the apex, the center of the monument, where the two angles of the wall come together. It towers over my head and I'm surrounded by names on the shiny black granite on both sides of me. Right to left, up and down, thousands of names. I feel consumed by them, the thousands and thousands, the tens of thousands of names. It all seemed representative of the way we entered the war.. one was killed, then more, then more and more and more, and before we knew it, we were consumed by it, we were in over our heads. A half million Americans there, over fifty thousand killed. I’m overwhelmed with the emotion. The loss, the lives lost, the futures of so many people erased. My mind wanders to the families they left behind. The children they never had. The futures that never took place. Thoughts of those who went and died. Their memories somehow preserved in this sacred place, carved into stone.... Black stone, now towering over me... I saw a family looking for the name of a loved one. They knew the segment of the wall his name was on, they were huddled together as one of them ran their finger over the names, trying to find the one who was their long ago lost loved one. All of them watched the finger scanning the names. Sliding over each name down the wall, name after name, and finally his finger stops. Stops on “his” name... The name of their loved one. The one they lost so very long ago and they all gasp out loud... A soft gasp... They touch each other... Hold on to each other for support from what seemed to keep them from falling... Tears flow, hugging each other, silent soft sobs, the finger remained on the name and heads bow. They took out a piece of paper and a pencil all huddled together. They placed it over his name and pencil rubbed his name onto the paper. The man's name was magically transformed onto it. When it was done he held it up and they all touched it... Silently tears running down their faces. I began to walk up the sloped walkway... The wall slants downward as the walkway went up. The rows of names shorter... From a thousand, to hundreds and then less and less and less. Before I knew it, I was then taller than the wall.. and it got more and more narrow, until I reached the last panel. Ankle high, the last name... One person... One name to the row, the last man, there's always a last person to die in a war... Someone’s son... Someone’s father... Someone’s lover, husband, wife... Friend... I turned and looked back at the family holding the paper, holding each other, tears still flowing... But some smiles and laughs as they remembered their loved one... As if they were telling stories of his life, of who he was, where he was from, how he had lived his life, how much they loved him and all of the memories of who he was. And there I was. My eyes wander upwards to the leafless trees against the bright blue sky. I was also crying. Tears running down my face, emotions running deep inside me, my thoughts turn to life. Love... Loss... Honor... Sacrifice... Dreams... Hope... Gratitude. We, at Tom's, on this Veterans Day, would like to thank all of those that have served and sacrificed for our country... For our freedom... For all of us. We recognize and appreciate your sacrifice and the sacrifice of all your family members. The gratitude we feel is immeasurable... Thank you. Below are photos of the moment I write of above, when a family discovered the name of their loved one on the wall. The old photo is of my dad, with my grandparents, on the day he shipped out to WW2. The look of fear in my grandmother's face, as she knew might never see her son, my father again. The third is of the Korean Veteran's Memorial. The fourth, a gift of a medal, left at the "Wall" by a Veteran, for his friend whom he lost in the war.
