Hello from a recent local orchard trip! We're trying to get as many outdoor trips in before the snow comes.
Not surprisingly, Boise was named one of the top cities to retire! 😎

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month! Often overlooked at rescue shelters, older pets usually come with advantages: they are often already potty trained, they are full-grown so you know what you're getting into, and they generally don't require the hard work that comes with adopting a puppy or kitten. If you've been thinking about adopting a pet, please consider an older boy or girl! Below are links to the ASPCA website where you can search for adoptable pets in your local area (just enter your city or zip code). And if you do decide to bring one home, we welcome you to post pictures of your furry new companion!

Residents share what they love about living at Touchmark at Meadow Lake Village in Meridian, Idaho.
When Touchmark Founder and Chairman Werner G. Nistler, Jr. was caring for his aging parents, he wished he could find a place where they would be valued as individuals with unique backgrounds, needs, and goals. Not finding such a place, he made it his life’s mission to create that for others. Today, Touchmark’s core values—excellence, teamwork, hospitality, integrity, and compassion—are the building blocks Touchmark uses to reach its ultimate mission: To enrich people’s lives. It’s time to make a move and enjoy your retirement. Call 208-996-1322 to speak with a retirement counselor and reserve your spot.
“Every organization should be modeled on this one, frankly. This kind of service and caring is unique. To put a basket of food and plants on my counter for me as I moved in—I’ve never seen such hospitality before. Everyone I’ve encountered, from the front desk, Dining Services, Housekeeping, to truly everyone, is focused on your needs. They work beyond the call of service here.” - Meredith Mason, resident
Finding a doctor is an essential step in creating a health care plan, but finding one who fits your unique needs is even more important, since the relationship you have with your doctor makes up a large part of your health care experience and can influence everything from the general mood at routine visits to outcomes during procedures. Check out our latest Touchmark blog for things to consider when finding a new doctor:

In November of 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations..." On this sacred day, Touchmark thanks all veterans for their many sacrifices, so many of which we will never truly know but most certainly benefit from.
Gratitude is a powerful tool. It can help improve emotional well-being, strengthen relationships, and provide comfort during challenging times … and this year certainly has been challenging! But as we all know, life is full of unexpected detours. Navigating them can result in joyous experiences, but it can also test us. Incorporating a practice of gratitude into one’s life can be tremendously helpful. The question is: how can we do this effectively? Read our latest blog to learn more.

Enhancing Well-Being with Gratitude
“Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.” — Voltaire
Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all for which we are grateful, which for us, includes all residents and team members who make Touchmark a loving, caring place to live and work. We know this year likely looks different for our families, but we sincerely wish all of you a fulfilling holiday, whether meeting in person or virtually. Additionally, we want to remind residents and their family members that our staff members are happy to assist with any phone or computer get-togethers; simply call the front desk to ask.
We invite you to peruse the last Touchmark community newsletter of 2020 as we lean into the holiday season. Enjoy!

"Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas." – Calvin Coolidge
From all of us at Touchmark, we wish you the very happiest of holidays today! This year looks different for many of us as we have had to adjust our plans and traditions, but we believe the goodness and love in each of you transcend and space or distance. We are thankful for all residents, team members, and their families on this special day.

Happy New Year from your friends at Touchmark! We hope your New Year's resolutions include plenty of self-care and love, and that this year brings us all good health and blessings.

It is safe to say that over the course of the past year, most of us have gotten more skilled in online communication than we might have expected. However, it can still be hard to feel close to our friends and loved ones when we are not physically present with them. Zoom, Facetime, and other technologies have made bridging the gap considerably easier, but the playful back-and-forth that is so easy to create during face-to-face interactions can still be hard to achieve. Learn all about various options in our latest blog!

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which gives us all an opportunity to reflect on Dr. King’s groundbreaking, crucial, and moving work toward equality for all. As we ponder what we can do to uplift others on this day and going forth, we think of Dr. King’s words: “We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that the time is always ripe to do right.”
“January 27, 2020 marked 75 years since the Allied troops arrived at the gates of Auschwitz, but it is clear that the story of how they came to be there in the first place must be shared more widely. The Holocaust—the murder of 6 million Jews by the Nazis and their collaborators—didn’t occur in a vacuum. It was the product of unchecked hatred and collective silence.” - World Jewish Congress
Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day and a very sober reminder of one of history’s most horrific series of events. We are reminded just how important freedom is, as well as vowing to never forget what happened so we may prevent it from ever happening again. For those wanting to learn more, we encourage you to visit the United Nations website below for virtual events. #WeRemember

Happy International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day! Did you know that the first dog biscuits were first made on a local scale in England in the 1820's? It wasn't until about forty years later that they would be manufactured on a large scale in the United States (by James Spratt, who also was from England). And, it wasn't until 1907 that dog treats came in the shape of a bone.
To celebrate this day, here is an easy, 3-ingredient dog biscuit treat for you to give your loyal pup (and if you don't make them until later, don't worry! Your dog won't mind a late celebration).
1 large, overripe banana
1/2 cup all-natural peanut butter
1 1/2 cups rolled oats
Preheat oven to 350°F (176°C). Mash the three ingredients together, and either roll out on parchment paper and cut out with cookie cutters or arrange on a baking sheet in 1" balls, pressed flat. Bake for approximately 15 minutes and let cool before letting your canine friend devour them. These treats will keep in the fridge for a few weeks!
In addition to providing delightful songs and entertainment, birds play an essential role in our ecosystem. From predators to prey, enjoy learning about the birds that call the same places home that Touchmark residents do in this second blog post for February, which is National Bird Feeding Month.

When you are a "Packer-Backer," you celebrate every game, whether it is a practice game, pre-season game, or the NFL Conference Championship game! During a game earlier this year, caregiver Heather not only helped residents dress in their green and gold but also put together a tailgate party for them! She made popcorn and green and gold drinks, purchased snacks, and even made gluten-free brownies for those with dietary restrictions. Even though the Green Bay Packers did not get to play in the Superbowl this year, we enjoyed all the laughter and shared memories. Thank you, Heather, for being a friend and building community one relationship at a time.
