More validation that digital advertising needs a extreme makeover. One digital advertising executive told me recently that the entire adtech (advertising technology) space is about ready to Super Nova. Let's hope we stay out of the black hole that follows! http://www.foliomag.com/2016/digital-advertising-a-shady-shoddy-fast-growth-business/?hq_e=el&hq_m=3227823&hq_l=6&hq_v=96151bfaea

My 20 year old son is studying Communications at Denison. He's a big "South Park" fan and showed me the latest episode just released which focused (at least partly) on the sad and annoying state of online advertising, and more specifically, "sponsored content". This AdWeek column covers the episode well. Sponsored content is slowly becoming the defacto standard approach to fighting back against the increasing use of ad blockers by consumers. If you're interested in this topic, you may find this humorous.
Meanwhile, OnWords is working very hard to help publishers make ads more helpful and contextually relevant without the need for consumer's personal data, and without relying so heavily on sponsored content. http://www.adweek.com/news/television/south-park-hysterically-satirized-ad-blocking-and-sponsored-content-168206

South Park Hysterically Satirized Ad Blocking and Sponsored Content
Publishers, in a panic to stem their losses in the midst of a chaotic transition from print to digital, have been slowly but continually ceding control of their first party data and their ad inventory to advertisers and well-funded technology companies. The result has been creepy ads that follow us around the web, annoying pop-ups, and a vast array of creative gimmickry designed to make us click on useless, unwanted links.
At OnWords, we are working closely with publishers and industry experts to build a new alternative. Our "consumer-first" mind-set keeps us laser focused on creating personalized experiences based on the types of things they enjoy reading.
This MarketPlace (Public Radio) piece captures the state of things pretty well in under 4 minutes. http://www.marketplace.org/topics/tech/digital-ad-industry-looking-less-annoying-options Feel free to share your experiences with digital ads in the comments below. Have you resorted to using an ad blocker? Do you find ads on mobile devices more annoying than computer-based ads?

Part of OnWords' mission is to make content and advertisements more helpful and relevant to the reader. In order to make this a reality, we are working hard to divine new ways to capture and utilize online data...we are after all in the business of Big Data Analytics! However, the OnWords team believes firmly that if customer data is used respectfully and sensitively to deliver better service or added convenience, we will be successful. Most of us are okay with Netflix providing suggested shows/movies based on our viewing habits, or Amazon letting us know that "people who bought X also bought Y and Z". We intend to model our platform after those solutions, which we hope you agree will be a nice change from the car ads that follow you everywhere anytime because you visited a car site two weeks ago. I found this post relevant to this discussion, and thought I'd share it with you our loyal followers. http://www.plannerben.com/?p=1382&imm_mid=0d76b4&cmp=em-data-na-na-newsltr_20150826
