About

North Suffolk Cardiology was founded in 1980 by physicians Peter F. Bruno, MD, Michael P. Cesa, MD, and Albert H. Riccio, MD. Today, our practice is the largest cardiology practice on the North Shore of Long Island. We specialize in adult cardiovascular disease-preventing, diagnosing and treating heart and vascular disorders through both non-invasive and invasive means. While invasive treatment of heart disease is sometimes necessary with angioplasty or heart surgery, we are able to successfully manage the vast majority of our patients with medical therapy and help them return to a high quality of life. Listening to the needs of our patients and their families is the essential first step in delivering the high-quality standard of care that we strive for, and our patients deserve. At North Suffolk Cardiology, you and your family are involved in every step of the way in the medical decision-making process.

September is #NationalCholesterolEducationMonth, which is the perfect time to check in with your doctor about your levels. High levels of LDL or bad cholesterol, is one of the main risk factors for heart disease and stroke which are two leading causes of death in the U.S. One way to help prevent these diseases is to find out your LDL cholesterol level and treat it if it is too high. Cholesterol levels can be affected by several factors, some of which are controllable, some of which are not. Your age, gender and family history, unfortunately, cannot be controlled. However, our diet, physical activity and body weight can all be controlled. 🍉🚴‍♀️🤸‍♂️ Use this month as an incentive to find out your cholesterol levels. Call (631) 941-2000 to schedule an appointment with one of our cardiologists!

Today, during the #GreatAmericanSmokeout, begin your journey towards a smoke-free life or help a loved one quit. Smoking greatly harms the cardiovascular system, as the chemicals in cigarette smoke cause the cells that line blood vessels to become swollen and inflamed. This can narrow the blood vessels and lead to many cardiovascular conditions such as atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease or stroke. The best thing smokers can do for their hearts is to quit. Those who quit start to improve their heart health and reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease. Are you a smoker or have quit recently? Schedule an appointment with a cardiologist by calling (631) 941-2000.

Today is National Women Physicians Day where we honor women doctors across the country and their accomplishments. At North Suffolk Cardiology, today we recognize Dr. Laura Wolfe and Dr. Lina Restrepo. We were able to catch up with them to chat about what inspired them to become doctors. Here's what they had to say: Dr. Laura Wolfe "For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a physician. I remember being fascinated with the human body even when I was young. My parents started their careers as radiology technicians and I distinctly remember spending hours looking through their books as a young girl. There were times when I told people my aspirations and very quickly got a sideways glance or a "that's nice" response, implying that it was not a realistic expectation. Soon thereafter, my aunt became a physician. This was the first time I personally knew a female physician! It was then that I realized that becoming a physician was not just a fantasy but a very tangible reality. She warned me about the long hours and the countless sleepless nights, which was very accurate. Despite all the difficulties of the day to day part of the job, I would not trade what I do for the world. I consider myself very honored to be a woman in the field of cardiology and hope that my presence somehow inspires the next generation to pursue their dreams." Dr. Lina Restrepo "I knew I wanted to become a doctor since the age of 7 when my little sister was born. I remember playing doctor with her. I knew that I loved caring for her when she was sick. I was convinced early in my life that I would be in a field where I can make a difference. As a woman cardiologist, I knew I would continue to take care of patients' hearts not only physically, but emotionally as well." #NorthSuffolkCardiology #StonyBrookMedicine
February is American Heart Month, this month reinforces the importance of heart health and serves as a reminder to get people involved and turning attention to keeping families and communities free from heart disease. The American Heart Association urges people to take care of their hearts year-round and consider the facts: ❤️ Heart disease kills more people than all forms of cancer combined. ❤️ Heart attacks affect more people every year than the population of Dallas, Texas. ❤️ 83% believe that heart attacks can be prevented but aren’t motivated to do anything. ❤️ 72% of Americans don’t consider themselves at risk for heart disease. ❤️ And 58% put no effort into improving their heart health. Need a cardiologist? Call (631)941-2000 to schedule an appointment with one of our board-certified cardiologists.
