To reduce aerosol transmission of COVID-19: Avoid crowds Avoid indoor spaces with poor ventilation Avoid close proximity with anyone not in your immediate family Avoid close proximity for a long duration of time Avoid being unmasked in public Avoid talking, singing, or yelling in close proximity of others “Aerosol” (sometimes referred to as “airborne”) transmission is similar to droplet transmission, except that the bits of fluid are so small that they can linger in the air for minutes to hours from simply breathing.
TriNatural Healthcare is incredibly grateful to all the firefighters out there putting their lives on the line to protect us. I just spoke with a patient that works for Portland Fire and he said that 70 of their staff are out working the wildland fires, so everyone else is working overtime right now. He's just off a 48-hour shift today for 24-hours, and then back to work again tomorrow. He said everyone is exhausted and resources are stretched so thin that they "have to get creative." Sending thoughts, prayers, and gratitude to all firefighters everywhere!
An instructor at OCOM reminded us of this simple recipe to cool, soothe and nourish throat and lungs: "I poached a whole bunch of pears this morning with honey, cinnamon, ginger, lemon and some goji berries. I can feel the relief immediately. Add the peel back in too. I’m diluting the water with fresh water so I can sip it all day. The kids love it too. Pears are on sale at Whole Foods right now." You don't need every ingredient to benefit, pears and honey will do wonders on their own. Thank you to Elizabeth Hazzard for this information. With air quality so poor, keep time spent outdoors to an absolute minimum, wear a mask (preference for tight fit to the face), and keep our neighboring communities in your hearts. --Amanda (OCOM Class of 2021, Clinical Intern of Chinese Medicine)
Dear Patients, We are all aware that wearing a mask is very difficult (We get it. We have had to wear them all day at work for four months now), but it is the current law of our state, and one that we are required to be compliant with or risk being fined, or losing our business or professional licenses. As a small business that is struggling to stay open and keep our staff employed, we ask that our patients show us the small kindness of being compliant with this law. It is currently the kindest thing you can do to show how much you appreciate us. As a small business with several employees that are immune compromised or with high risk co-morbidities, you wearing your mask tells us that you care about our staff. It is also very emotionally stressful for our staff to ask other adults to be compliant with this law. So please: ~You must wear your mask over your nose and mouth during the entire time you are in our office, including during your massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic treatments. We are so grateful for your compliance with this matter during this very stressful time for our business. We are so grateful for you. Thank you, Barbara Beale, LAc Kamala Griffith, DC TriNatural Healthcare

The Washington State Department of Health announced that they have launched a program to support people affected by the stress of COVID-19. The COVID-19 pandemic has created new levels of stress and anxiety for many Washingtonians. State disaster psychologists say this is normal and increasing numbers of people will need some kind of mental or behavioral support as we head into the fall and the holidays. That’s why Washington has launched Washington Listens, a support program and phone line to help people manage elevated levels of stress due to the pandemic. Washington Listens support line is 1-833-681-0211. It is available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. TTY and language access services are available by using 7-1-1 or their preferred method. Resources and self-help tips are available on walistens.org

Brene Brown's interview with The Nagoski sister is a MUST LISTEN. “Stress is not bad for us, getting stuck in stress is bad for us.” “Emotions are tunnels. If you go all the way through them, you get to the light on the other side.” “Exhaustion and burnout happens when we get stuck in our emotions.” “Burnout happens when we don’t let our feelings go full cycle.” Things We Can Do to Complete the Stress Cycle 1. Dear Patients, Please do not come into the office if you are awaiting COVID test results, or if you have recently been COVID exposed. If you end up testing positive that means your doctor or therapist will have to quarantine for fourteen days. Grateful, TriNatural Healthcare

A few more answers to questions about the new mRNA vaccines: Are the vaccines made with fetal cells? • Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines do NOT use fetal cell lines. Do the mRNA vaccines use preservatives and adjuvants? • Easy answer—no • More complicated answer—traditional vaccines use preservatives such as thimerosol, an organic mercury, and aluminum, an adjuvant that activates the antigen. Because mRNA vaccines do not contain or require the growth of a virus they do not need preservatives or adjuvants. Are the vaccines grown in or do they contain eggs or gluten? • Easy answer—no • More complicated answer—mRNA vaccines do not contain any proteins so there is no need for concern about egg or gluten allergies.
I had a patient ask me this week if the new Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines can alter a person’s DNA? • Easy answer—no • More complicated answer—Messenger RNA (mRNA) is genetic material that contains instructions for making proteins. It is initially copied from DNA inside the nucleus of the cell and then shuttled out of the nucleus where it is run through ribosomes that act like 3D printers to make proteins. Each mRNA is pretty unstable and can only be used ~10-100 times to make proteins (for hours to a few days) before it falls apart. The mRNA cannot go back into the nucleus in humans. For mRNA to be made back into DNA it requires an enzyme called reverse transcriptase and humans do not have these enzymes (some viruses do, but coronaviruses are not one of them).
