Phase 4: OUTPATIENT: You’ve done it! At this point, you have the confidence and compassion to live your life mindfully without the need for very frequent support. You will continue to gain insight and understanding of self upon check-ins with your team, and feel comfortable trusting yourself in life’s situations. With a concrete plan for continued mental health support, you will discharge from True Life with a sense of renewal and security - and you certainly deserve it.
Phase 3: IMPLEMENTATION/RESOLUTION: Almost there! In this phase, we work together to plan for safe and effective discharge from the IOP or PHP program. You will identify objectives for lifelong mental wellbeing and any potential barriers to living mindfully. Through real life experiences, you will independently and actively implement skills and insight in your relationships and responsibilities immediately. As you continue to explore and process your root etiology, you will be able to tolerate and be present with difficult feelings and sensations of moderate distress.
Phase 2: SKILL BUILDING: Upon gaining insight into triggering thoughts, feelings, environments, and situations, our integrative team provides you with mindfulness and distress-tolerance skills to utilize in real time, and we’re with you every step of the way. With these sets of skills, you will have the resilience to be able to dig deeper into your struggles. It’s with the understanding of your root etiology that you will be able to strengthen your personal and interpersonal relationships in a healthy and effective way.
Phase 1: STABILIZATION: Within your first couple of weeks under our care, we work with you to gain a thorough understanding of your history, current struggles, and goals. We will perform comprehensive assessments and diagnostic clarity, begin stabilization of the symptoms you are experiencing, provide psychoeducation, supervise/support detox from substances if required, and allow you time and processing with the team members of different modalities in order to create a treatment plan. In this phase, we help you create awareness with your own body by engaging the parasympathetic nervous system, regulating physiological functions, and decreasing any harmful coping behaviors.
Over the next week, we’ll be sharing what our Phases of Care look like here at True Life Center for Wellbeing. These phases have been established to give our patients the best possible outcomes upon discharging from our PHP and IOP programming. Structured in a way that eases you back into fully living your best self, we guide you gently and with support so that you feel confident walking out of those doors your last day.
World Mental Health Day was observed for the first time on this day in 1992. Within 3 years, the planning materials developed for the day were translated into Spanish, French, Russian, Hindi, Japanese, Chinese and Arabic. With an initial goal of "Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services throughout the World," the day itself has expanded globally to include themes such as: women, children, health, work, trauma, suicide, and so much more. Stand with us as we unite the cause and advocate for the global mental health movement by sharing a post with #mentalhealthforall.
"Valerie's mindfulness skill comes from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) which is an approach that blends Western Cognitive Therapy and Eastern Meditative approaches to help people achieve emotional stability, decrease stress and live in acceptance and mindfulness. DBT provides a variety of distress tolerance skills, mindfulness skills (like the one featured today), emotion regulation skills, and interpersonall effectiveness skills. Because the teachings of DBT are so concrete, patients leave TLC with confidence that they can manage the difficulties life throws our way. . . . . . . . #EmotionalWellnessMonth#mindfulminute#DBT#minfullness
Testimonial from True Life IOP patient: "Have anxiety? Want to do more than numb it with some pills and call it good? This is the place you want to be. They really helped me with the physical issues my anxiety was causing that nobody else seemed to be concerned with. Yoga, nutrition, fitness, meditation, massage, acupuncture and therapy are all used to get you healthy in all areas of your life. As with most things, you have to be willing to do the work, but it’s worth it!"
It's no secret these days that health doesn't begin and end with just the body. Our emotional wellness plays a huge role in our overall health, yet starting or maintaining practices that honor our emotional and meal health is easier said than done. October is Emotional Wellness Month, so here at True Life we challenge you to try just one mindfulness practice for 30 days. Every Monday, we'll feature one of our staff members leading a mindfulness activity for you to try. All of the practices are simple, but it's not always easy - be sure to set an alarm or reminder for yourself!
Ciarra is an acupuncturist and body healing specialist here at True Life. Today, she's walking us through how to create some space and mindfulness in stressful times - when we feel the physiological effects of fear, anxiety, or nervousness. This exercise helps to engage the parasympathetic nervous system, calming those intense physical symptoms and bringing you to a place of calm and stability right in the moment. . . . . . . . #EmotionalWellnessMonth#mindfulminute#breathe#anxiety#parasympatheticnervoussystem#minfullness
Testimonial from True Life IOP patient: "Where to begin? True Life Center gave me my life back. I was at the end of my rope, ready to be done with it all before my parents talked me into trying one more place. Right from the start it just felt different here. I felt normal, and not like a crazy person. Everyone I talked to really looked at me and really listened. Looking back now I can honestly say I would not recognize that very desperate, scared girl. The team here – and I love every single one of them I’ve worked with – helped me uncover and deal with some very serious trauma that I figured would haunt me forever. I feel happy! What a difference a year makes. To Dr. Roybal, Dr. Lowe, and the entire crew – thank you from the bottom of my heart!!"

At the center of so many conditions of mental illness, there is dysregulation of the nervous system, which means that people feel physiological symptoms of anxiety, trauma, and depression in their body, whether that be lethargy and lack of energy, heart palpitations, chest tightness, or muscle tension and night sweats. At True Life Center, we use Neurobiological Integration (NBI) to help regulate the nervous system to transmit chemicals that make you feel more calm, safe, and energized. Achieved through the incorporation of multidisciplinary therapies, we can understand and address how the mind and body are experiencing and expressing psychological and physiological distress and implement skills to facilitate greater healing and awareness.
The “gut” is a super system, helping us regulate mood, identify emotion, and fight off illness. Chronic stress, fatigue, anxiety, and substances lead to disturbances in the gut which only further contribute to painful physical and emotional symptoms. That’s why we nurture gut health and nutrition at True Life. Our Registered Dietitian meets with patients to help establish healthful balance and simple structure that patients can feel confident about continuing throughout their lifetimes. This is important, because by maintaining the wellness of this system, we help to regulate the health of body AND mind.

By avoiding conversations about suicide with the community and our loved ones, we uphold the stigma that negative thoughts and feelings shouldn't be shared. Those with mental conditions and/or oppressed groups are more likely to take their own lives. 800,000 people die by suicide each year, and so many more are affected by this loss. Survivor's Day is about supporting those who have lost a loved one to suicide, and getting them the resources they need to process their tragic loss. If you are someone you know has been affected by suicide, please don't hold it in: attend a Survivor's Day event or local grief support group.
