Throwback to 1904! Schenectady was once known as "The City that Lights and Hauls the World." This was in reference to the industrial powerhouses located in the city, the Edison Electric Company (now known as General Electric), and the American Locomotive Company. These prominent businesses became major economic forces that helped establish the city and region as a national manufacturing center. At this time, the Schenectady population had grown to 31,682 compared to the 13,655 twenty years prior.
