Flooring Fact Friday: Wool carpet, a product that people seem to either love or hate. Most people don’t like the idea of wool carpet because of the incredible difference in upfront cost compared to that of a nylon or polyester fiber. But there is a lot that goes into the making of wool carpet, and there is more to it than a large, scary number. The natural fibers in wool make it extremely durable and has the potential to last decades. It’s also a product that a lot of time is hand-tufted, which takes a lot of time and precision. Wool is stain resistant, hides dirt really well, and cleans up exceptionally well. And one of the most important aspects of wool carpet, in this day in age, is that it is sustainable! It is naturally obtained, recyclable, and biodegradable. Only ⅓ of the electricity used to make a nylon or polyester fiber is used to make wool! When looking for carpet, wool carpet should definitely be a contender in your efforts to spice up your home. Come by our store and check out the Hibernia Woolen Mills line, owned by Stanton, that we now carry samples of! They have so many different patterns, and colors along with the option of doing beautiful area rugs with your choice of finish around the edges. Flooring Fact Friday: With waterproof flooring on the rise in the flooring industry the most frequent question we get asked is, “What is the difference between laminate and luxury vinyl products?” If you are also asking this question, don’t worry, you aren’t alone! So let us try to help with this mix-up! Laminate has 4 main layers: backing, fiberboard, 3D printed design, and the wear layer. The backing layer provides stability, keeping all of the layers straight and balanced. The fiberboard layer is a high-density board that is made out of, “ which is made of compressed wood particles, resins, polymers, and plastics”. This is the thickest of all the layers. The 3D printed design layer is a thin layer that is printed out to resemble the look and texture of real wood. The topcoat layer is a clear finish that enhances the laminate and gives it a better ability to stand the test of time. It makes it more resistant to fading, scratching, and every day wear. Every company that produces laminate will vary in the way they make it, but these are the basic layers that make up a laminate product. LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) is also made in layers and consists of the same basic layers but they contain different ingredients. Instead of using fiberboard, the main layers consist of fiberglass, PVC, and plasticizer. The benefit of this is that these ingredients make LVP extremely water-resistant. It is great for the bathroom and kitchen floors! The confusion between laminate and luxury vinyl products is one that is understandable. They seem similar and they do contain the same basic layers, just made up of different ingredients. The biggest difference is their water resistance; since laminate has a wood particleboard base it is not water-resistant but luxury vinyl is made up of plastics so it is very water resistant! They both have their pros and cons. It’s really up to you to decide which one you would personally benefit from having! Flooring Fact Friday: On this wonderful Friday afternoon, we are going to take this time to talk about flooring that will outlast the ever changing trends. Trends come and go, but you want and deserve a floor that will always be popular. Marble Tile: Looks good in every room, house, and setting. It dresses any room up, and catches everyone's eyes. This tile is classy, and class never goes out of style. Handscraped Wood: This specific type of textured wood makes any home look expensive. The handscraped look is different but makes any room cohesive. Knots and distressing in wood are an attribute of flooring that waxes and wanes with the flow of the trends, but this texture will always look good in all types of home aesthetics. Herringbone: This way to lay down planks of any kind including: tile, wood, and LVT, is used in homes where the owners have a specific vision but adds a little extra flair to any home. This pattern is unique and adds dimension, it will definitely stand the test of time. #flooringfactfriday
