An ice sculpture is always a great, eye-catching centerpiece, but that doesn’t mean it can’t also be functional. For example, the ice can be sculpted into a fountain that cools drinks while dispensing them, or can have places built to keep champagne bottles chilled.
The Sapporo Snow Festival takes place every February in Japan. Begun in 1950 by local high school students, the festival now features over 400 statues, many of which depict celebrities such as baseball player Hideki Matsui.
