As I mentioned at the Annual Meeting, if we saw the opportunity to pursue one or more acquisitions in a way that was prudent, that would not jeopardize the overall financial health of the Union League and wouldn’t change by one day, or one dollar, the master plan for the renovation of the main house that President Davidson laid out for us last fall, we would seize those opportunities. Well, we have. The Union League of Philadelphia has purchased the facility known as the ACE Golf Course and Conference Center from the CHUBB Insurance Company. The property has been renamed Union League Liberty Hill to reflect not only our patriotic history and values, but also the fact that the ground was the site of a Revolutionary War battle field.”

Did you know the logo for Union League Liberty Hill was inspired by the Spirit of '61 sculpture in front of the League House?
The sculpture by Henry Kirke Bush-Brown was commissioned by the First Regiment, Infantry of the National Guard of Pennsylvania in 1911 to celebrate their 50th anniversary. The First Regiment, a successor to the Gray Reserves, was called to action following the attack on Fort Sumter in 1861. The sculpture depicts a soldier marching in full uniform - one of the first of its kind.
The statue was installed in front of the Union League with plans to move it to Fairmount Park. No location was determined and the work was formally deeded to the Union League in 1962 in celebration of the regiment's centennial anniversary.
This beautiful work of art served as the inspiration for our newest companion amenity's logo. The logo was created in-house by Valerie Grove, the League’s Digital Media and Graphic Designer.

We are saddened to report that Walter Smith, a dedicated and well-loved employee of the Union League for 53 years, has passed away at the age of 83.
Walter’s first day at the League was September 23, 1960. He started as a bus boy in what was the Ladies Dining Room. As he said to the Banner staff just prior to his retirement, “I didn’t come upstairs much. I was only a bus boy for three months though and then I was a food runner in the Oak Room - that’s the Meade Room now. The names have all changed over the years.” In 1962 Walter was promoted to work in the Cloak Room, which was the original position he applied for in 1960. “I was very happy that I was asked to take this job and I’ve been here ever since.” Walter described the original Cloak Room as two floors with four employees. “Times were much different. There were two Cloak Rooms, one at Broad Street and one at 15th Street. They were much larger and members would take a number and keep it. It was an unofficial system but they liked it, and we got to know all of their numbers. That’s when the membership was about 1,400 or so.”
Walter took great pride in his job and always offered the best service. He was quoted as saying, “I love the League, and I love being able to help the members. This is my second home. I was in the book that was made when we celebrated the League’s 100 year anniversary. I was here to celebrate the 150th anniversary in 2012, and now it is time to retire.”
Anyone who came through the Broad Street doors or visited the cloak room before his retirement in January 2014 knew Walter, and will remember him for his dignified and gentlemanly demeanor and quiet sense of humor. Walter’s smile brightened the day of everyone he met. “I’ve never been out of the Unites States, but I know people all over the world because of the League. I’ve made great friends over the years.” Walter was a fine example of a dedicated employee, but an even better example of a giving, loyal friend. We are all better for having known him.
The League is discussing an appropriate gesture to mark Walter’s passing and honor his service. Details will be forthcoming.
