I'm Master Ness and I love the martial arts. Not just the punching and kicking, but what the martial arts can do for you. I love the confidence, the self-discipline, control, the peace of mind, the clarity, the focus, and the I-can-do-this attitude that comes from a warrior spirit. I try to make sure our students learn not just how to defend themselves, but philosophies that'll touch every corner of their lives. One being you can achieve anything you want to in life.
Just two things need to happen.
Number one, you have to get started. And second, you have to want it bad enough not to get distracted and not to give up until you get there. My training officially started over 20 years ago. When I was 17, 18 years old I picked up my first uniform. I wanted to start when I was much younger, but my family wasn't well-off, government cheese, food stamps, and such. So I had to grow up a bit, get a job, and pay for my own karate classes.
My younger students all know and appreciate the opportunity they have starting so young. I tell them when they're, if they stick with it, when they're as old as I am, they'll be much better than Master Ness. I've had my share of challenges in life. Never knowing my dad, foster home, picked on at school. You know, I wanted to fit in and be accepted by others. Thank God for the martial arts. It gave me somethin' to strive for, something I can measure my successes in, and look forward to from week to week.

I'm really grateful for this location of the United Studios of Self Defense that are walked by every day, on the way to the bus to go to work.
