Blackjack is a sweet little 10-month-old Pomeranian who was referred to our Ophthalmologist at Upstate Vet, Asheville, Dr. Whitney Young, after his teething stage got him into some trouble. He set his sights on some wires at home and while he thankfully didn’t get an electrical shock, he did get a wire stuck in his mouth, which then penetrated the vitreous chamber of his eye. The result was residual inflammation. We are extremely pleased to report that Blackjack is recovering well with a topical steroid and oral antibiotics. Our Dentistry department highlight of the week is this sweet hound named Gravy! Gravy is under the care of Dr. Beth Romig at our Asheville, NC hospital. This little guy experienced trauma as a puppy. Consequently, the right side of his nose stopped growing and resulted in the abnormal development of his teeth. He received treatment to remove the abnormal teeth and Dr. Romig made sure his remaining teeth were healthy despite being crooked. ❤️ We think his smile is adorable just the way it is! Halloween is just a few days away! Here are some pet safety tips to keep in mind this year: 🎃 Do not feed your pet chocolate, raisins, grapes, or sugary treats. 🎃 Avoid costumes that could be ingested, cause choking, or restrict movement. 🎃 Be aware that doorbells, unfamiliar guests, and costumes may be extra spooky for pets. 🎃 With plenty of opportunities to escape, be sure that your pet has proper identification, and consider microchipping your pet. 🎃 Toxic food and treats are abound throughout Halloween. Be sure to keep them away from pets, and make sure your guests know to do the same. 🎃 Keep your pet inside to avoid harm from unintentional pranks. Despite treatment, he continues to experience oral pain, bad breath, drooling, and loss of appetite. To give him the greatest relief and quality of life, extracting his teeth is the best treatment option. Fear not, Chico will still be able to eat a healthy diet and function normally, and most importantly, be pain-free! Meet Neil Patrick Nohairris! 😉 Neil Patrick Nohairris is a 6-year-old Sphynx who belongs to one of our own, Breanna, a veterinary technician in our Internal Medicine Department. He presented to Admissions at our Greenville location for feeling a bit under the weather; he was lethargic and wasn't eating food. After a thorough examination by our emergency department, it was determined that he had a foreign body lodged in his stomach. He is currently stable and awaiting surgery. Fun fact: Neil is also an Upstate Vet Blood Donor (Type B)! We are always so thankful for our feline and canine blood donors. ❤️ With Halloween around the corner, we want to remind all pet owners that Upstate Vet is here if an emergency with your pet should arise. 🔻GREENVILLE | AFTER HOURS EMERGENCY CARE Monday – Thursday 6:00pm – 8:00am Friday 6:00pm - Monday 8:00am 🔻ASHEVILLE | ADMISSIONS (URGENT & EMERGENCY CARE)* Monday – Sunday 8:00am – 8:00pm *By referral only
As the Upstate of South Carolina and North Carolina experiences heavy winds and rain as a result of Tropical Storm Zeta, we want to assure our referring veterinary community and our clients that all patients are safe within our hospitals. We ask for your patience when calling as our Client Service Representatives are working hard to respond to calls from both locations. A special thank you to our medical teams for their dedication to caring for the animals, and also to the first responders for ensuring the safety and well being of all essential personnel -- both human and veterinary.
This otherwise superstitious day has brought good news to a cool cat named Ruby, who visited the Cardiology department at our Greenville, SC location. Ruby, pictured here with Dr. Tschosik, was referred by Dr. Bryan Allen at The Pet Vet on Patton in Asheville, NC for evaluation of a heart murmur prior to anesthesia for a dental procedure. A heart murmur can sometimes indicate that there is underlying heart disease in cats (most commonly heart muscle disease aka cardiomyopathy in adult cats). An echocardiogram is the most sensitive and specific test to determine if this is the case. Luckily for Ruby, she had only very mild changes that may not progress during her lifetime and she can safely have her dental procedure. Fun fact: Ruby is leash trained! #upstatevet #themoreyouknow #catsofinstagram #catsoffacebook #cardiology #vetmed

Meet Jack! Jack is a 10-year-old Maltipoo who presented to the Upstate Vet, Greenville Internal Medicine department for evaluation of vomiting, dysentery, and the build-up of fluid around his lungs. Pictured here with one of our Internist, Dr. Vanessa Von Hendy-Willson, and Veterinary Technician, Rebecca, Jack was ultimately diagnosed with a protein-losing enteropathy. This is a process where the gut becomes diseased and, due to inflammation or other processes, protein is lost causing vomiting and dysentery. This low protein can also lead to fluid build-up around the lungs and in the belly cavity. Treatment involves diagnosing and managing the underlying intestinal disease. Jack has responded very well to therapy and since starting treatment has remained a healthy boy! We love seeing him for his rechecks and are glad he has responded well. A special thank you to Dr. Flowers with Pleasantburg Veterinary Clinic, Inc. for the referral. Did you know that the Upstate's ONLY veterinary radiation oncologist is at Upstate Vet in Greenville? Dr. Nathan Lee is a board certified radiation oncologist who recently joined our team. For tumors that respond better to radiation than chemotherapy, he utilizes our state-of-the-art Varian Halcyon™ technology to treat numerous tumor types, including cancers previously thought to be untreatable, while sparing damage to normal surrounding tissues. Some therapies involve as little as 3-5 treatments. In addition to killing cancer cells directly, radiation therapy is used to alleviate pain and improve quality of life. Just ask the adorable pup pictured here! You may remember our friend "Derek Jeter" as one of Dr. Lee's patients currently using the Varian Halcyon machine to treat his cancer. Derek Jeter is continuing to do well thanks to Dr. Lee's treatment plan. It appears that Christmas is in full swing here at Upstate Vet. Meet Peppermint Stix and his trusty K9 partner, Grinch🎄 Due to our COVID-19 Safety Protocol, Peppermint Stix is in quarantine until further notice. We had to make a special exception for K9 Grinch who hurt his leg returning from the North Pole. Our Critical Care team jumped into action to save the day! Fear not, K9 Grinch is recovering well from his procedure and expected to help the other elves in time to spread holiday cheer. Maddie is an Internal Medicine patient who has immune mediated thrombocytopenia, otherwise known as ITP. This disease is caused by an autoimmune attack against the pet's own platelets, and usually the initial cause of this is unknown. We are excited to report that Maddie is taking her recommended medications and doing very well since her diagnosis. She's the sweetest girl who really loves her treats. 😍 Our internal medicine specialists diagnose and treat many different canine and feline systemic diseases and utilize advanced, state-of-the-art equipment. "Do you see what I see..." Meet this handsome, 9-year-old Husky, Taysha🐺 He comes to us as a referral from Haywood Road Animal Hospital for diabetic cataracts. In August, Taysha began bumping into things around the house and his owners brought it to the attention of their primary veterinarian, Dr. Melina Redding. In September, a cataract removal and phacoemulsification procedure was performed on both eyes by our very own, Dr. Diana Pate. Phacoemulsification is a state-of-the-art technique our specialists often use, which offers the best success rate for cataract surgery in dogs and cats. Following removal of the cataract, the lens capsule remains in place and an artificial intra-ocular lens (IOL) can be placed within the capsule to optimize visual acuity. We are elated to report that Taysha is doing very well post-operatively! Visit our website for more information about cataract procedures, other ophthalmology services, and our team of specialists: https://bit.ly/2KpDguC

During her consultation, she also met Dr. Rennie Waldron, our board-certified neurologist, and had an MRI scan to rule out any neurological and tumor issues as the cause. When results revealed a pituitary mass, CT scans were ordered for planning purposes of how to proceed with treatment. The plan of action was definitive therapy for 16 treatments. In honor of National Pet Dental Health Month, we will be featuring stories throughout February from our Dentistry & Oral Surgery Department. Let's get things started with this cutie. Meet Charlie, a 12-year-old Chihuahua with periodontal disease, who is a patient of Dr. Beth Romig. Periodontal disease, otherwise known as gum disease, is a silent issue with dogs and cats with no outward signs and symptoms. Yet once it advances, gum disease can devastate your pet's mouth, causing chronic pain, eroded gums, missing teeth, and bone loss. Many smaller and older patients require more intensive anesthetic protocols that specialty hospitals are able to provide. This includes post-operative hospitalization and other specialists on staff to help assure the health and well-being of your beloved pet. Thank you to Dr. Engen of College Animal Hospital in Newberry, SC for the referral! #upstatevet #dentalawareness #specialtyvetmed #yeahTHATgreenville #visitAsheville

We are excited to share with you a 3D CT video of a dentistry patient named Huey. He is a 7-month-old domestic medium hair feline who was referred to our Dentistry & Oral Surgery specialist, Dr. Heather Duncan, by Dr. Deborah Perzak from Woodruff Road Animal Hospital. Huey's owner noticed a mild swelling below his left eye as well as a discharge, which appeared to be getting worse. While Huey was under anesthesia for his neuter, Dr. Perzak discovered that he was missing his adult left upper canine tooth. Being thorough, she performed a dental x-ray and found the tooth impacted in the nasal sinus. Once under the care of Dr. Duncan, a CT scan was performed to help her locate the exact position of the impacted left maxillary canine tooth and to properly plan for Huey's oral surgery. This 3D video details the impacted tooth in the left nasal sinus-- it is very close to the left eye! We are thrilled to report that Huey is doing great and there is significantly less swelling below his eye and the discharge has resolved. In one more week, he should be back to his normal self! This case is an excellent example of how CT can help in surgical planning. #upstatevet #dentalawareness #specialtyvetmed #yeahTHATgreenville #visitAsheville
Blood Donor Hero, Tigris, wanted to remind you that pets can require life-saving blood transfusions for many of the same reasons humans do. Reasons such as injuries, surgeries, or when diseases cause the body to destroy its own blood cells. Together, Tigris and her Mom, Allyson, a veterinary technician at our Greenville, SC hospital, work hard to save lives daily! Check out the number of lives Tigris has saved by becoming a donor hero. 😍 For more information on how your pet could become a Blood Donor Hero, visit our website: https://bit.ly/32FK2kQ #upstatevetbloodbank #upstatevet #vetmed #blooddonor #donorhero #quarantinedonor #essential #yeahTHATgreenville #GVLToday #ASHtoday #yeahTHATasheville

Reece is a patient of our radiation oncologist, Dr. Nathan Lee—the ONLY board-certified radiation oncologist in the state of South Carolina! Reece just began his definitive treatment plan at the end of January and will receive 19 treatments for a soft tissue sarcoma (STS) of the right hip. At 11-years-old, this is the best plan for Reece as it is the least invasive measure to treat STS. These tumors include those that arise from the connective, muscle, or nervous tissues in dogs or cats. These types of tumors are the result of abnormal production of these cell types in an uncontrolled manner. Soft tissue sarcomas make up about 15% of cancers of the skin affecting dogs, and about 7% of those affecting cats. This little fella should look familiar to you! Blue, who is now 8 months old, was featured back in the Fall of 2020 as a dental patient with a malocclusion, otherwise known as a severe overbite, where his lower canines protruded into his jaw palate. We have been treating the malocclusion with a removable orthodontic appliance and we are pleased to report he has done great! This has allowed us to avoid a more invasive procedure that would require anesthesia, and now Blue has a healthy, pain-free bite! Thank you to Dr. Roseveare at Travelers Rest Animal Hospital for the referral! And be sure to leave a ❤️ for our compassionate dentistry assistant, Mickey, and this sweet boy, Blue. #upstatevet #dentalawareness #specialtyvetmed #yeahTHATgreenville #visitAsheville
Meet his sweet Australian Shephard mix named Chloe! 😍 Chloe originally came to us as a referral from Dr. Paul Black at Seneca Animal Hospital, PA for ocular issues. Dr. Diana Pate consulted on the case and determined there was mild vision loss in the left eye. Chloe then went for an MRI under our board-certified Neurologist, Dr. Courtney Sampson, to determine if there were underlying neurological concerns. As a result of those scans, Dr. Nathan Lee, our Radiation Oncologist (the only one in SC!), ordered a series of CT scans. The conclusion was a recommendation of radiation therapy for an optic nerve tumor and a definitive treatment plan of 16 treatments. Meet Mei Lee, a sweet feline with a prolapsed gland of the third eyelid, commonly known as "cherry eye". The gland is actually comprised of two tear glands positioned around each eye in dogs and cats. The prolapse occurs due to a weakness of the connective tissues that hold the gland in place. Mei Lee had a procedure to fix the prolapsed gland at the beginning of February, thanks to our specialty ophthalmologist, Dr. Whitney Young. Stay tuned for a update post coming soon! Meet this precious, 9-year-old, cocker spaniel named Poppy! Poppy was referred to our Internal Medicine department at Upstate Vet, Asheville, and met Dr. Suzi LeGrange (pictured) back in July 2020. Her referring doctor, Dr. Tim McMullan at Pinnacle Animal Hospital, suggested a consultation due to Poppy experiencing chronic diarrhea and weight loss. At that time, Poppy was a recent rescue, so her medical history was not well known. Dr. LeGrange performed an upper and lower endoscopy in August 2020 and diagnosed Poppy with gastrointestinal inflammation and prescribed steroids, fiber supplementation, and a GI food. Over the past few months, Poppy has come in for routine rechecks to show off her wonderful progress! As a result, the prescription steroid was decreased and she was officially discharged from our Internal Medicine department last month. We love her dearly and wish her much health in the future! #upstatevet #AVLtoday #vetmed #internalmedicine #visitasheville
Weezie is the sweetest 4-year-old English Bulldog. She is a referral from Dr. John Warner of Inman Animal Hospital and a patient of our board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Elizabeth Schaefer. Dr. Schaefer diagnosed Weezie with a corneal ulcer. A corneal ulcer is an abrasion, scratch, or deeper wound on the eye surface that often results from ocular trauma. We are pleased to report, after a follow-up appointment mid-February, the ulcers are 100% healed! Eye conditions that cause chronic corneal inflammation, such as KCS or abnormal eyelash growth, can also cause a corneal ulcer. These painful ulcers typically cause redness, squinting, tearing, and discharge, and possibly a cloudy-looking cornea. Most corneal ulcers are superficial and resolve quickly with eye medications; however, deeper ulcers may require longer, more intensive treatment, and possibly surgery, to preserve vision, and save the eye. Say 'Hi' to this handsome guy named Grimm! In March 2020, at one and a half years old, Grimm was diagnosed with mediastinal T-cell lymphoma that was affecting his ability to breathe. He started chemotherapy treatment in our Asheville, NC hospital with Dr. Sarah Collette, a board-certified Oncologist, the following week. Grimm completed a full course of CHOP chemotherapy over 6 months. CHOP is an abbreviation for the drugs used- cyclophosphamide, hydroxydaunorubicin (doxorubicin), oncovin, and prednisone. It was also recommended that he take a daily supplement and herbs to complement his chemotherapy. Grimm is currently in remission and has a follow-up with Dr. Collette once a month to monitor his blood work, lymph nodes, and chest x-rays. In his free time, Grimm enjoys walks, eating treats, playing frisbee, and kicking the soccer ball with mom and dad... our very own board-certified specialists, Drs. To the K9 partners who work day and night, on land and at sea, helping us, protecting us, and keeping our families and communities safe... 🐾Thank You🐾 This year we salute K9 Rusty, who retired from Greenville County Sheriff's Office in October 2020. Since he joined the force in 2016, he was a part of 116 deployments, covering over 200 miles, with 32 confirmed 'finds' for missing persons and criminals on the run. Rusty's most notable trail was when he located a missing person of 21 hours, nearly 8 miles away from their last known location! His distinct howl was beyond adorable and would excite the crowd during a friendly demonstration. Rusty is thoroughly enjoying his well-deserved retirement with his handler, Deputy Robinson, and family. #upstatevet #k9life #k9veteran

Meet Racer, a patient of ophthalmologist, Dr. Whitney Young, at Upstate Vet, Asheville. He is a referral from Dr. Kaplan at Charlotte Street Animal Hospital for secondary glaucoma and uveitis. Uveitis is inflammation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye. It is a painful condition that can cause a range of ocular signs such as tearing, light sensitivity, squinting, and third eyelid elevation. Intraocular inflammation can cause the retinal vessels to leak red blood cells, white blood cells, and protein into the eye, which may discolor the intraocular fluid, or settle to the bottom of the eye. Depending on the cause, treatment may consist of surgery or medical management. In Racer's case, Dr. Young prescribed eye drops and a recheck visit once a month until she determines that only a bi-annual visit is needed.
