Kicking off Women’s History Month with the woman, the myth, the legend, Donna Jean Godchaux.
Donna was the only female member of the Dead and sang with the band for almost all of the 1970s. Her story with the Dead began when she introduced Keith Godchaux to Jerry Garcia where he then became the keyboardist for the Dead. Shortly after, she also joined, providing back up and lead vocals and later becoming an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Grateful Dead. Prior to 1970, Donna worked professionally as a session singer working with artists like ELVIS PRESLEY, Cher, Duane Allman, Neil Diamond and more. It’s safe to say the story of the Dead would be incomplete without her presence.
