We really appreciate this public post regarding copperhead season! Jerry Lee Harlowe‎Patapsco September 25 at 5:30 PM · I saw an earlier post on Copperhead snakes but can't find it now . . . so here's something I snagged off of another page: . . . . . A friendly reminder and warning for those of you with kids and dogs - It is September and the start of football season, but it is also the time of year when copperheads are born. The baby snakes are born with venom and ready to defend themselves. The mama snake generally gives birth to about 8 - 10 of these critters, so if you find one there are others around. The babies will keep those greenish/yellow tips on their tails for about a year. These snakes are not generally aggressive but will bite if you are unfortunate enough to touch or step on one. Do not reach under bushes, around rocks, or even flower pots without looking first. They like damp places so beware, even under children's toys and dog dishes! It is one of our favorite weeks here at Valley Veterinary Emergency Hospital! Today we begin our week long celebration of Vet Tech Week!! “The week of October 11-17, 2020 has been set aside to celebrate, recognize, and promote the valuable contributions you, as credentialed veterinary technicians, make to the veterinary profession and society.” We like to utilize this opportunity to raise awareness about the vet tech position as so many people from communities all over are actually unaware that you can have a career as a veterinary nurse. It is quite an extraordinary job full of so much opportunity!! But first, let’s get real for a moment... it is often assumed that a veterinary nurse’s only purpose is to snuggle furry critters all day long. Crazy, right?! While snuggling and comforting patients is definitely involved, the real job description of a veterinary nurse is absolutely mind blowing! The job description includes but is not limited to: -Providing general nursing care -Checking vitals in preparation for the Veterinarian -Radiologist -Administering first aid for emergencies -Pharmacist -Administering medication and treatments -Phlebotomist -Anesthesiologist -Performing ultrasounds One veterinary technician is responsible for all of the above!!!! Can you believe it?! Well, it’s true!! They choose this selfless profession from a place of love and a true passion for veterinary medicine. The veterinary field often involves more work and less pay in comparison to the human medical field so please, if you are lucky enough to know a selfless and hardworking veterinary technician don’t forget to thank them this week!! To all you veterinary technicians with those superpowers of yours, you are the heart of every clinic you choose to work in and we are so grateful for the empathy and compassion you share with the animal patients and their humans. Happy National Veterinary Technician Week from all of us here at Valley Veterinary Emergency Hospital! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Wwj4dlBnbLA YOUTUBE.COM What is a Veterinary Technician?
“Tito” meet “Waffles”. “Waffles” meet “Tito”. Tito was an incredibly good boy today!! While Tito was hanging out in our private cat suite, Waffles decided to climb up to say hello to Tito. There is something to be said about friendship. “Each friend represents a world within us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born. A friend is someone who gives you total freedom to be yourself. The only way to have a friend is to be one.” Whether it be a human child or a baby animal, we think there is nothing more sacred than the innocence of both. Hug a friend today! Happy Wednesday all!

Meet handsome man “Sammy” here! Sammy has had quite a wild ride the last few days of his doggy life. Aside from healing Sammy, our goal has been to keep him as comfortable as possible during his hospitalization here with us – he is on several medications to achieve this. Sammy is one of our postoperative care patients and has been receiving medical treatments 24/7 to support his road to recovery. We have been taking Sammy for his bathroom walks and each time we tell him how handsome he is, his tail goes wild for us! He absolutely LOVES all the snuggles he's been receiving. Sammy is a stud muffin and adores the ladies! Keep going Sammy boy! We love you so much! Thank you to Sammy’s wonderful family for allowing us to share these photos of Sammy’s journey here with us.
Meet "Lucy"!! Our precious baby Lucy went home today after being hospitalized with us for a couple days!!!! We are so proud of Lucy for fighting as hard as she did. When Lucy first arrived here at the ER she was seriously ill. Our emergency teams worked around the clock to get Lucy well again. As you can see by this photo, Lucy's momma was over the moon with joy to get her baby home. Lucy's nurse, Kelly, was both sad and happy her patient was leaving. We tend to become easily attached to all of our patients and Lucy was certainly no exception. Happy day for baby Lucy!! Thank you to her family for allowing us to use these precious photos!!
Meet little miss “August” here! August was a patient of the day last week for us here at Valley Veterinary Emergency Hospital. August was rescued from a pile of trash as a baby and her rescuers quickly became her forever family. We think it is safe to say she hit the lottery with the family who found her! Today we followed up on August and she has continued to move forward on her personal road to recovery. We wish August and her family only the best! Can her face possibly be any cuter?! We think not! This perfect little soul has the courage of a lion! Those big bright eyes have the power to shine a little light on everyone’s day! Thank you to her lovely family for granting us permission to share her with the Facebook world! Keep going August! Give this little warrior a "like"!
Good afternoon! Meet “Skip”! He is our patient of the day! Not only does Skip have the most perfect nose to boop, he also has an incredible story. Skip is a true fighter! Years ago, Skip was found after being hit by a car. He had sustained trauma and had been with injuries for a lengthy amount of time before being found and treated with proper medical attention. Due to his injuries, he has some permanent leg deformities, but he is so happy he does not even notice! Skip was such a good boy! His rockstar nurses used the fear free method today while giving him his injections. Shelly gave him kisses while Ashley talked with him and used safe yet minimal restraint as his injection was administered. Thank you to his owner for granting us permission to share these photos! Also, special thank you to our incredibly compassionate emergency nurses! Feel free to give little Skip a “like”! Look at that sweet face!

Happy Halloween! Please be mindful of your pets when having candy in your home. This is a day when the chances of your pet ingesting toxins such as chocolate or xylitol and many others are dramatically increased so please remember to keep all candy out of your pet’s reach. Also, another common issue on Halloween is pets running out the front door as you hand out goodies to those who are trick or treating. We recommend being mindful of these things. Below is a flyer offering some basic Halloween safety tips to help you keep your pet safe. We are open today as we are any other day! We are here 24/7 if you should have an emergency with your pet!

Meet “Daryl”! This handsome fella is now back at home and on the road to recovery! Daryl spent the last couple of days with us here in the ER. We are so proud of Daryl for being such a good boy during his hospital stay with us. We know it is tricky to see through the mask his nurse is wearing, but she and Daryl were in the middle of having an in-depth discussion about how perfect he is. In case you are all wondering, Daryl said he knows he is perfect, and we could not agree more! This perfect gentleman absolutely LOVED having good conversation with us. We will miss snuggling those sweet cheeks! Just look at that sweet face! Thank you to his wonderful family for granting us permission to share this picture! Be sure to give "Daryl" a "like"!

With the cold temperatures among us, it is SO important to check for any creatures seeking warm refuge in the engine or tire areas of your vehicle. You can help save a life by banging on your hood and waiting a few minutes or honking your horn. This can happen to ANYONE. This is the time of year when we unfortunately see a lot of urgent cases involving kittens and cats who have suffered trauma under these circumstances. We ask that you please share this post to help raise awareness – even just one share could save a life! Please stay tuned for future posts! We will be sharing ideas on how you can help provide shelter for these animals who are so desperate for some shelter from the rain, snow, and cold.

Here at Valley Veterinary Emergency Hospital, we are big believers in the Fear Free method founded by “America's Veterinarian,” Dr. Marty Becker. “Fear Free is a new concept in veterinary medicine which aims to recognize and reduce fear, anxiety, and stress associated with visits to the veterinary hospital.” (https://www.mspca.org/angell_services/fear-free-concept/) When it comes to restraint, we often use the phrase "less is more" as we prefer to use gentle control. The key to practicing the fear free method is to utilize our intuition and truly understand each patient's body language. When it comes to more aggressive patients, we ask ourselves and the owner several questions before determining the best course of action. Another big reason for why we love Fear Free methods is because it allows the safety of our staff and our patients to remain our number one priority. We hope you will take a look at this article as it is full of great information about the Fear Free method movement. MSPCA.ORG What is the Fear Free concept in Veterinary Medicine? • MSPCA-Angell

From an animal's perspective, desperate times call for desperate measures so it is common for small animals to seek refuge in the engine of your vehicle. We ask that you please share this post to help raise awareness – even just one share could save a life!

From an animal's perspective, desperate times call for desperate measures so it is common for small animals to seek refuge in the engine of your vehicle. This is the time of year when we unfortunately see a lot of urgent cases involving kittens and cats who have suffered trauma under these circumstances. This can happen to anyone. We ask that you please share this post to help raise awareness – even just one share could save a life!
