We are so excited to be able to offer trees in our nursery department that are under $100! In the past we’ve struggled to find younger trees that were a good quality product at an affordable price, but we finally found them! They are grown in a root pouch, which is great for root growth, and made of recycled materials. We also have some new maple tree varieties with beautiful fall colors. Stop in to take a stroll through our nursery and check them out!
I don’t know about you guys, but I can’t stop decorating for fall🍁

We can’t believe it’s mid October already! As our perennials begin to get cut back for the season, we wanted to remind you that it’s best to get your perennials in the ground by the end of October. This will give the plants a couple weeks to get their roots settled before the ground freezes!

Have you heard of Marimo Moss Balls? They’re so fun and easy to keep, either in a glass terrarium, or in your fish tank! They are a form of algae and are naturally found tumbling through lakes and rivers in Japan and Northern Europe. We recommend keeping them in cool filtered water, and changing out the water every 1-2 weeks. It is said that adding ocean salt to the water on occasion is beneficial for them. Do you have any Marimo?
Every morning when I come into work, the ceiling lights are off, but the Christmas lights have been turned on. It makes me feel so happy and warm. If that doesn’t get you feeling holiday, I don’t know what will.
Did you know that poinsettias require a photo-period in order to change color? This is the amount of light the plants receive. This means they need bright light during the day, and uninterrupted dark hours at night. Even street lights and other minor light pollution can interrupt the process. Ours are starting to show so much color already!

Potted bulbs are in! We’ve started stocking tulips, daffodils and hyacinths to brighten up your home on cold winter days like today.🌷❄️
According to a recent online survey the number one thing people wanted to do this spring was plant more outside. Well, if that's high on your list, we've got you covered! Whether it's a whole new landscape or a couple perennials to fill in, our outdoor plant departments will be brimming before you know it.
Do you ever find that after you’ve watered your plants, the soil seems dry only hours later? And when you’re watering, the water appears to run straight into your saucers? This could mean that your soil may have dried out and stopped absorbing water. Breaking up the potting mix (as seen with a stake) can help allow the water to reach the lower levels of soil, instead of running right now the sides of the pot to the drainage holes. Allowing the plant to sit in a tray or tub of water can also help if breaking up the potting mix doesn’t do the trick.
January and February are great months to cozy up with some graph paper and plot out your spring garden! Are you planning a vegetable garden this year? Tell us what you'd like to plant!
Lisa normally goes to Atlanta this time of year to do shopping for Spring and next Christmas. This is just another challenge we've had to adapt to for the time being, as she stays safe and sound at home this time around.

2021 feels hopeful and exciting, but it's also coming with warnings from many of our vendors that some initial orders and re-ordering will be tough when it comes to home decor and gift items. Word to the wise this year: if you see something you have to have, it might not be available later!
So excited to see freesias in our floral shop that were grown right here at Van Atta’s! They’ve just started blooming, so there will be much more to come in the next month! 🌸
