We are very excited to announce a new addition to our team - Dr. Ruth Andrews!
When Dr. Andrews was very young, she spent a lot of time in Mexico because her father is an archeologist. She remembers having a hard time making friends because she was shy and didn’t speak the language. As a result, she became obsessed with the animals around her, including a Mexican wolf that someone domesticated (now an endangered species), bats, and a chicken that she raised from an egg. Ever since, she has had a special connection and interest with animals. As soon as she was old enough to know what a veterinarian was, she knew what she wanted to do when she grew up.
Dr. Andrews isn’t sure she has grown up yet, but she has become a veterinarian. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a V.M.D. (U. Penn’s equivalent of a D.V.M.) in 2006. Immediately post-graduation, she returned to her hometown of New Orleans and worked at a small animal clinic belonging to the city’s previous zoo veterinarian. Because of her early experiences with exotic animals and subsequent work in Africa, Ruth thought she wanted to do wildlife medicine and was happy to find a job with someone who had worked with exotic animals. But she surprised herself and fell in love with dog and cat medicine and has continued the work to this day.
She has since moved to Colorado and lives with her husband and three dogs in Boulder. At work, her particular interests include the human-animal bond, medicine, and dentistry. Outside of work, she loves to read and hike. She has a particular fondness for beagles since rescuing one in vet school, especially because it once led her to another beagle at a dog park that was attached to a man who is now her husband. She is very excited to join the VCA family now!
Wow, September has gone by really fast. And, with October around the corner, we want to know what your pet wish is for the coming month! #VCApets
Remember the first time you saw your cat cough up a hairball?
It’s scary when you don’t know if your cat is coughing or choking. It’s always best to consult your vet if your pet regularly demonstrates either behavior. Dr. Aimee Simpson of VCA Cat Hospital of Philadelphia explains why in today’s Daily Paws. #vcapets

Broken tails can sometimes heal on their own, but as Dr. Aimee Simpson of VCA Cat Hospital of Philadelphia explains, there are other considerations for cat owners mending a tail injury. Learn more in Daily Paws. #vcapets

Tip #8: Prioritize cuddle time. Petting your cat or dog releases “feel-good” hormones in your brain and can reduce your blood pressure by as much as 10%.
