Today is Global Cat Day, a special occasion devoted to unowned, free-roaming “community” cats. These cats often get a bad rap but it’s important to understand that these cats aren’t so different from our beloved pets. As a matter of fact, many are living on the streets as a result of being abandoned by their families. We've included some tips to help manage and care for the community cats in your neighborhood. Helping these cats starts by being a responsible guardian! Spay/neuter your own cat and keep them indoors. * In just seven years, a single pair of cats and their offspring could produce a staggering total of 420,000 kittens! #VCApets

An update from our Hospital Manager- First and foremost, “Thank you,” for your continued trust when it comes to the health of your furry family member. When we first initiated curbside service in March, I never imagined we would still be functioning in this manner. Needless to say, it will likely be awhile before we return to the “normal” process you were accustom to. Hopefully as Covid-19 vaccinations are being rolled out now we will be able to get to a normal way of life for all of us. Please know that we remain focused on three leading priorities. The first is the safety and well-being of our associates. We are dedicated, as essential workers, to remain available to service all of our clients, and it is important that we protect ourselves to the best of our ability so that we can continue to be able to do so. Second, our patient’s health remains of prime importance, therefore we must give priority to the pets most critical. Third is you, our client, who is essential in trusting us to care for your pet. We continue to ask for your understanding and patience during this pandemic. Our hospital is currently challenged with an extraordinarily high demand. Our team is working as hard as possible to ensure your pet is seen in a safe yet timely manner. We recognize that increased safety and cleaning precautions between patients require additional time, and our curbside service takes additional resources in order to communicate well and keep everyone safe. Rest assured that each pet receives the excellent care and attention he/she deserves while they are here with us even under these unusual practices. Our local emergency hospitals are seeing long wait times, sometimes up to 10 hours, and some are having to stop seeing patients due to the high demand. Our emergency hospitals have asked the general practices (like VCA South Arundel) to see as many sick appointments that we can to help keep their wait times down each day. We are a large practice and are seeing sick patients from area general practices that have reduced their hours, do not have staffing, or are shorthanded due to staff being out on sick leave. Due to the increased time related to properly provide the best care for your pet, our appointments are booking weeks in advance. Sometimes our appointments are running a little bit longer due to the sick pets we are seeing. There are days that we may be short staffed as well- if a team member is not feeling well we ask them to stay home and not risk infecting the team. We strongly encourage you pre-book your pet’s next appointment for the next available date, as it may be several weeks from now. We are still catching up wellness exams from the few months that we were on lockdown and the government said we could not see wellness at that time. If your pet is past due for vaccines or annual exams we are asking that you get that scheduled now. If your pet has vaccines due in the next few months- please get these appointments set up now- we are currently scheduling into April. One of the biggest things you can do to help us serve you better is to download the MyVCA App. There are many things you can do right through the App without having to call us. You can order medication and food refills, schedule or cancel appointments, and see what is coming due for your pet. We also now have the ability to do a video chat with you while your pet is here. This action by you will help keep our phone lines free- we know that sometimes you cannot get through. We have 6 phone lines and most of the day they are ringing off the hook. You can also schedule your pet’s next appointment and order medication or food refills on our website. For any questions that are not urgent you can send our front desk an email at VCASouthArundel@VCA.com and they will respond when they can. Our entire team really appreciates all the kind words that clients have shared with us during this unprecedented time. We know some days can be frustrating and we thank you for your patience. We all love what we do. We are thankful every day to be here to help you and your pets. In closing, I want to take this opportunity to again thank you for your continued trust in us when it comes to the care of your pet. We know not being alongside your pet during their appointment can be frustrating, but your faith in our medical team and your support through these trying times is what gets us through the day. We absolutely love being able to serve your family, and appreciate all of the kindness and support shown to our essential healthcare team over the past several months. You and your pets truly make each day better than the last. Sincerely, Kimberly Beverly Hospital Manager VCA South Arundel Animal Hospital Kimberly.Beverly@VCA.com
