Did you know that some domestic cats can run up to 30 mph? Though their wild counterparts, the cheetah, can run clock over 60 mph, we think 30 mph is plenty fast for inside! #funfactfriday #vcasouthshore
Way to go Massachusetts State Police! So happy to hear that Scout is safe and sound. ❤️ Massachusetts State Police October 8 at 7:01 PM · Yesterday a volunteer member of Missing Dogs Massachusetts inquired if the Massachusetts State Police drone team could assist in looking for a lost dog in Marblehead if the unit was planning on being in the area for any other missions or training exercises. Scout, a 10-year-old Australian Shepherd mix, had been missing for a week. His owners thought he might be in a marshy area of thick woods and brush near their home. Neighbors had heard what sounded like a dog whining coming from the marsh at night, but multiple volunteer search parties had not been able to find him. Today, Trooper Brian Doak from the MSP drone team conducted a training mission in Marblehead and took the opportunity to fly over the wooded marsh. The drone’s FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) camera detected a heat source inside an area thick with brush. Documenting the location, Trooper Doak hacked his way through the thick vegetation toward the heat source, and when he reached the spot the drone had detected, there was Scout, alive and well but unable to get out on his own. Scout’s owner snapped this photo of Trooper Doak and Scout emerging from the wooded marsh. We were thrilled to be able to reunite Scout with his family. The Massachusetts State Police drone team is utilized for search and rescue missions, as well as for video and photographic documentation of evidence from the air, mapping of crash or crime scenes, and to provide overflight support for tactical missions, such as those involving barricaded suspects or hostages. (The drone unit does not surveil private areas without a court-authorized search warrant.) Missing Dogs Massachusetts (MDM) is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that works to reunite missing and found dogs with their families. MDM works cooperatively with animal control officers, rescues, shelters, law enforcement, and the media. For more information about them, visit https://www.missingdogsmass.com/ .
On walks, you would like your dog to pay attention to you, right? Be present yourself. If you use headphones on a walk, only use them in one ear so that you can hear what your dog is hearing and respond accordingly. Try to avoid phone calls so that you are paying attention to what is happening around you. Walks are a great opportunity to work with your dog on engaging with you in a distracting environment! Meet one of our furry friends! Roger came in because he needed his teeth cleaned. Thanks to the great images obtained by our dental x-ray machine (and the amazing, trained staff that knows how to use it!), Dr. Lucas was able to see that Roger had a tooth infection, as well as an area where there were roots but no tooth! Extracting both was necessary to alleviate any source of pain from that area. To say that Roger was feeling better afterwards was an understatement – as soon as he was awake from anesthesia he was wagging his tail! We were so glad to see that happy beagle grin again! You make us smile too, Roger! 🙂 #meetapatientmonday #vcasouthshore

Did you know that the word brachycephalic means “short-headed”? This term is used to describe the conformation of a variety of dog breeds including the Boston terrier, French bulldog and Pug, as well as Persian and Himalayan cats (to name a few). Brachycephalic breeds have been bred to have short muzzles and noses. This confirmation is attractive to many people, but can also come with some potential medical issues. Brachycephalic dog and cat owners should make themselves aware of these possible medical concerns so that they can do what they can to prevent issues/prepare for them should they arise. Your pet’s veterinarian is your best resource for information! Do you have a brachycephalic pet that’s stolen your heart? We’d love to see their pic in the comments below! ❤️ #funfactfriday #vcasouthshore

We are so glad you are on your way to recovery, Taz! 🌪 #meetapatientmonday #vcasouthshore

We’d love to see their picture in the comments below!❤️ #funfactfriday #vcasouthshore

It's National Golden Retriever Day! We know we're not the only ones out there who are in love with a golden (or 2... or 20!). Show us the golden that has your heart! ❤️
What is positive reinforcement training (besides something we believe in whole heartedly)? Positive reinforcement training uses a reward (treats, praise, toys, anything the dog finds rewarding) for desired behaviors. Because the reward makes them more likely to repeat the behavior, positive reinforcement is one of your most powerful tools for shaping or changing your dog's behavior.
