Home Fall Safety Tips for Seniors and the Elderly
Did you know that 1 in 4 elderly adults fall per year? Did you also know that once the first fall occurs, their chances of falling again doubles?
Also fact; most seniors don’t tell their families or doctors that they fell, which makes it challenging to address the problem.
Through our experience in preventing falls, Vibrant Health Homecare has identified six tips and strategies for seniors that can help prevent falls at home.
If you are a senior or know a senior, share this brochure. You just might help prevent another fall.
What an excellent way to begin the week!!!
Over the weekend, one of our clients and her daughter went for a weekend trip to Seaside, Oregon. Fast forward to today. I get a call from our client’s daughter asking me if I was in the office. I said, yes I was, and she said that she was going to pass by.
I quickly refreshed my memory to make sure I hadn’t missed any memo, a request, a complaint, etc.
Forward again to when the client’s daughter arrives at the office. After exchanging greetings, I was getting ready to ask her if there was a problem, but she quickly handed me a beautiful coffee cup. She explained that while they were shopping in Oregon, the client saw the coffee cup and stated, “I think the girl from the office would appreciate that coffee cup.”
Yes, I am “the girl from the office” because my client, who has dementia, does not always remember my name, but this reference helps her remember me.
And so they bought it for me.
Isn’t that something?

7 Ways to Pay for Home Care?
Many seniors and their families find the cost of homecare high, and often wonder if there are other options out there that they can utilize to help pay for in-home care assistance. If you have ever wondered the same, read-on. At Vibrant, we compiled a list 7 ways seniors pay for in-home care:
1. Long-Term Insurance
Long-term care insurance is designed to cover senior care, including in-home care when the beneficiary needs assistance with at least two Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Some policies require a doctor’s note stating that the beneficiary is not able to perform the said ADLs. Important to note; buy long-term insurance when you are young and able NOT when you need it. It will have more cash value available for you to use.
2. Medicaid
For eligible seniors who meet both the medical and financial needs, Medicaid may pay for in-home care assistance if the senior is on a personal care waiver. Please discuss the details with your state case manager.
3. Medicare
While Medicare does not cover standard home care as a standalone, it does cover it if it is provided in tandem with a skilled nursing service by a Medicare-certified agency.
4. Aid and Attendance Benefit
Eligible veterans and their spouses who receive a VA pension may receive an additional monthly payment to cover in-home care needs. Check with the VA.
5. Life Insurance
Some hybrid life insurance policies have a cash-value component in them. The cash value can be withdrawn and used to pay for in-home care expenses. Important to note is that the cash value builds over time, so it's better to buy early in life in order to have enough cash value available later.
6. Reverse Mortgage Loans
A reverse mortgage in simple terms is a loan or cash advance obtained against the equity in the home. It is available to seniors 62yrs and older. Please remember, this loan will need to be paid back when the last surviving borrower dies or leaves the home. Still, it is an option for obtaining liquid cash to pay for in-home care expenses.
7. Private Funding
Basically, means paying for in-home services out of pocket. Seniors who need only a few hours a day can afford this option, but it becomes more expensive than assisted living after a 50-hr per week mark.

Please don’t panic buy things. We’re in this together. Only buy what you need

We see the bare shelves in some places and recognize that some folks are panic buying. Grocery stores are continuing to receive supplies like normal. The supply chains will remain strong as long as people only buy what they need. Don't forget your mask and to maintain social distance in stores and please stay patient with hardworking employees, who are just trying to do their job. These tips come from the Washington Food Industry Association:
✔️Make a List and Stay Focused: Before you head out to the store, take a few moments to make an itemized list of what you need. This helps you shop more efficiently and not spend extra time in the stores.
✔️Try “Contactless” Shopping: Order ahead, pay ahead, then use curbside pick-up or try a delivery.
✔️ Shop Off-Peak Hours: Type the name of the store and its location in Google search. A box will pop up showing when foot traffic there is highest.
✔️ Respect the Limits Set – Don’t Hoard! Many stores have place limits on items such as eggs, toilet paper and more. Please respect these limits. They have been set in place to make sure that the products are available for all shoppers.
✔️ Please keep your neighbors in mind and limit your purchases to only what you need; don’t take it all. There is enough product available for everyone. Please think of your fellow shoppers who also may need supplies as well.
