Cats are supposed to have 18 toes (five toes on each front paw; four toes on each back paw). 🐾 🐱 Polydactyl cats (a cat with 1-2 extra toes on their paws) have this as a result of a genetic mutation. These cats are also referred to as "Hemingway cats" because writer Ernest Hemingway owned dozens of them at his home in Key West, Florida. Today there are still 40-50 descendants of the original cat (named Snow White) still living at the home and when hurricanes are predicted to hit in the area, staff stay behind at the home to make sure the cats are safe

October 12 at 6:06 PM · It is with immense sadness and heartache that the SIPCA Team would like to announce the untimely passing of EPD K9 Axel. K9 Axel served the City of Evansville faithfully for 8 years alongside his best friend and dad, Officer Zach Elfreich. Some might argue that this dynamic duo was one of the best this great City has ever seen. K9 Axel competed in many regional and national events during his time of service and either won or came in the top 20 in every single one of them. He was Top Dog for the USPCA Region 5 several times throughout his career. K9 Axel was a force to be reckon with but most of all he was a family man and loved his family with all his might. Our condolences go out to Officer Elfreich’s family and all that had the pleasure of knowing K9 Axel. He will be greatly missed. Rest easy buddy we got the watch from here. 🔶IMPORTANT INFORMATION🔶 Indiana started January 1st, 2021, requiring veterinarians to use Inspect a program used for all controlled substances in an attempt to monitor the opioid abuse epidemic in the United States. If any of your pets is taking a controlled substance like tussigon, alprazolam, tramadol, gabapentin, or buprenorphine to name the most common drugs dispensed, we are required to have a copy of the owners driver's license and date of birth and to query the owner of the pet every time the drug is dispensed which includes refills. We are basically doing the same process when you go to your pharmacy to fill a controlled medication. This is requiring more time for dispensing, so we may not be able to be fill the medication on the "spur of the moment" like before. Due to the lengthy process, all controlled drugs must be picked up Monday-Friday. There will not be any controlled substances allowed to be picked up on Saturday, so please plan accordingly. If your pet is on any controlled medication, please call the office 24-48 hours before you completely run out. If you have any questions, please call the hospital at 812-477-2131.

Here’s a story to warm your heart up on this cold day: A few months ago, one of our clients came across a young kitten who he had seen been hit by another car. After the drivers continued to drive off, he knew he had to help this poor kitten. He called our office and Dr. Melchiors agreed to see him. After an exam and several x-rays, Dr. Melchiors found that this 6 month old kitten had suffered a broken jaw, was malnourished, and suspected some head trauma present. The Good Samaritan who brought him in agreed to pay for treatment so long as we helped find a good home for the kitten. After asking around, an employee’s friend (and former employee herself) agreed to take this little guy and provide tons of love and care for this kitten. Grim has since made a full recovery, eats without issues, and enjoys hanging out with his cat and dog siblings. Thank you to those who help us in our passion of helping animals. ❤️

With puppy season upon us, little Azalea wanted to give a few tips and tricks to avoid getting scammed when searching for a new addition to the family! 1. ALWAYS do your research. Get as much information as possible on who you’re buying from as well as the breed of dog you’re considering. 2. If at all possible, try to meet your new puppy and their breeder in person before putting any money down. If distance makes this impossible, ask to video chat your new puppy. Videos are much harder to fake than pictures. 3. Ask the breeder for 3 references you may contact. This helps to give more credibility to the person you’re buying from. 4. When in doubt, ask the breeder if you can have your vet do an exam prior to purchasing to ensure your new family member’s health. Puppies are a huge financial investment and commitment. These tips and tricks will help you in securing your new best friend ❤️

We have been in contact with our Elanco Health Representative to dispel some of the myths we’ve heard recently circulating about Seresto collars. While some pets may have skin irritation from the collars, there have been no credible reports of harm done to an animal under safe and proper usage of this product. It is suspected that these anecdotes of risks associated with the collars are due to improper use, unrelated underlying health issues, and/or use of unapproved knock-off products. If any of our DVM colleagues release a credited study showing otherwise, we will be sure to notify our trusted clients.
You can never be too prepared when it comes to the health of your pet. For March’s Poison Prevention Awareness Month, our friends at the ASPCA outline toxic and non-toxic plants, foods to avoid feeding your pet, and poisonous common household items. ASPCA.ORG Animal Poison Control
