Avoid over-wearing your contact lenses and be sure to discard and replace them as directed. Even if you care for your lenses as directed, lens deposits continue to build up on your contacts over time. The longer you go before replacing your lenses, the greater potential these lens deposits have to reduce the oxygen supply to your corneas and damage your eyes.

It is with profound sadness, that we announce the loss of our leader and co-founder of The National Optometric Association, Dr. C. Clayton Powell.
Dr. Powell co-created The National Optometric Association, in order to open doors for African American students. The organization has been pivotal in creating opportunities for students of various backgrounds; supporting in the way of scholarships, grants, and matriculation programs. For over fifty years, the communities most often overlooked, have been serviced with events promoting minority ocular health.
Dr. C. Clayton Powell was a true leader, full of passion and conviction. His dedication to the profession was unparalleled and he will be deeply missed. Please keep his wife, Mrs. Deborah Powell, and their entire family, in your prayers.

High risk groups include people over 60, people with a family history of glaucoma, African Americans (after cataracts, glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness among African Americans and people of African descent), people who have experienced blunt eye injury (most common cause is sports-related injuries such as baseball or boxing) and Hispanics in older age groups. Many different eye conditions can cause low vision, but the most common causes are AMD (age-related macular degeneration), cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. Age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, is our focus this month. It is a leading cause for vision loss in Americans 50 and older. Risk factors for AMD include family history of AMD, aging, having light-colored eyes, smoking, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, high sun exposure and a poor diet with a low intake of antioxidants.
