Whether you’re mowing the lawn, wood working, or changing your oil, you should wear polycarbonate safety glasses, which can be bought for a few dollars in many home improvement stores. Ever wonder why your optometrist blows a burst of air into your eye during your regular exam? He or she is looking for glaucoma, a condition of the eye in which the optic nerve weakens, causing your vision to gradually worsen.
Putting in contact lenses with a handling tint is simple: place the lens on your fingertip then look down at it. If your lens is deep blue or green, you're doing it right. If your contacts have a laser marking or brand name on them, and you can read it, your lens is inside out!
Glaucoma is a complicated eye disease during which the optic nerve that carries visual information from the eye to the brain is damaged due to increased pressure in the eye (called intraocular pressure, or IOP). Glaucoma can leaded to permanent and irreversible vision loss, which is why early diagnosis and treatment is so important.
I’ve always had perfect vision, but recently, I’ve had trouble reading small print. A visit to your optometrist will give you the answer, but it is common for people as they hit 35 and older to lose the ability to focus on objects up close as well as they used to. This is called presbyopia.
It’s important to remember that vision issues can occur so slowly over time that you may not realize the subtle changes as they occur. If you’ve been experiencing more headaches than usual lately, that could be an indication that your vision has changed.
In 2015, eyeglasses will celebrate their 730th birthday. Salvino D’Arminte created the first wearable spectacles in 1285 when he used a hinged frame to connect two small magnifying glasses so they could be perched on the bridge of the nose.
Conjunctivitis (pink eye) occurs when tissues lining the eyelid and covering the white portion of the eye become inflamed or infected. The most common causes are bacterial or viral infections or allergic reactions to compounds like chlorine, cosmetics, pollen or other irritants.
When playing sports, make sure your eyes are well protected. Sports goggles made of polycarbonate plastic are stronger than regular plastic. The organization Prevent Blindness America recommends sports goggles marked as “ASTM F803 approved.” Sports goggles are especially important when playing racquetball, tennis, and basketball. If you play softball or baseball, you can find batting helmets with built in polycarbonate face shields.
Vitamin C, while being a good supplement for chasing off colds and sniffling noses, is also good for your eyes in that it slows down eye aging and reduces the possibility of glaucoma. It can be found in citrus fruits.
Doctors of optometry (DO) must complete at least seven years of advanced education, including a minimum of three years of college followed by four years of optometry school. DOs conduct vision and eye health examinations, prescribe corrective lenses and treat certain eye diseases.
